The Dream Sequel

i definitely wouldn't say LT requires less skill, but it is a much more limited skillset (i.e. one loadout) than base was

its funny to see all the ppl bitch about loadouts in Ascend, but LT only has 1

yeah thats why I totally dig the idea of ascend. I mean how easy is it plasma mid airing heavy's with chainguns and a burning shield pack anything but they just end up dealing more damage to themselves trying to get away like snails.

whenever i see people bitch about lack of vehicles or lack of loadouts

i m like yeahhh i m not some mechwarrior nerd that wants to role play i am here 2 wipe doodz with my superior gaming genetix

also this is a pretty common overdone discussion

(kind of like bodymass discussion between doodz)

but i would say in order 2 discuss skill people have 2 undersatnd the diff between knowledge of strategies and gaming talent and skill ceilingz

when u get dis u can talk 2 me

king of all 3

just dat people cant attribute the word "skill" in a broad sense if they dont even understand it u kno?

tribe get 1 high skill curve but 1 low skill ceiling

LT skill ceiling much higher than base skill ceiling imoZ due to the nature of the game

etcs

debate me bros

come @ me bros

and it truly is funny to see someone like tpk talk about low skill curve in a mod that requires you to do way more than your position in a base match. you're just an ignorant scrub who couldnt/wouldnt b able to hang, plain n simple b

i think opsayo is actually right that tribes base has a long skill curve while LT has a high skill curve

i was a HoF forever and rarely played anything else, LT was a big jump coming back a while ago

but the skill some of these cats are running is crazy, takes quite some time to adjust though its harder for heavy specialists for sure

i dont agree that playing HO or based is somehow easy, HO at the high level was really hard by the end with MA mine discing and chain whoring, getting in the base and doing real damage wasnt that easy towards the end of t1 base era

base has longer learning curve, esp. with running actual strategies in competetive play whereas in LT that almost doesn't exist. however I would not say that base has a higher skill curve. i would write a longer synopsis but i'm inebriated.

i hope u hold ur stormhammer high to the sky and thank children of the phoenix 4 bringing the wild marshes of the dangerous crossing

LT requires players to achieve a much higher level of skill on an individual basis, depending on teammates to function mostly autonomously in completing their tasks. It has to be this way because players are spread thinner than they are in Base, and it translates to a more macro style of teamwork. This isn't to say that LT didn't require the team to function like a well-oiled machine, but it does mean that a lot more is riding on any single player than there ever was in Base. Also, Base was just simply a bigger game. More players, more positions, and more tasks to coordinate. This made it more like a strategy game. Anyone who spent considerable time in Roger Wilco during bases hay-day, and in TS or Vent in LT's hay-day can attest to this difference. Being part of a team in Base was like being in scaled down military, with teammates functioning together in units for O, D, and within, LD, HD, Farmer, HO, MF, Capping and Clear. All of this had to be coordinated. But this also meant that...

Otherwise mediocre players can succeed in Base with high knowledge of the game, and a decent ability to play heads-up. In fact, these players wind up in positions like Farmer and HD. I don't mean to belittle the people who played these positions, as they were very important and respectable. But, these were the people who did not make it in LT. Good LT players are required to be much faster thinkers and have much better hand-eye coordination (among other things) compared to what many positions in Base required. Sure, a lot of the great base players went on to become great LT players, but a huge portion of the player base was lost because the formula for success changed drastically. It was night and day.

In a nutshell, LT is closer to Quake than it is to Tribes Base. Quake could be considered the quintessential, stripped down FPS. LT just adds a few layers, enough to make it a different game. But it's a far-cry from Tribes Base.

And all three of them are great fucking games. I prefer Base because I don't have the twitch reflexes and the ability to think fast enough to become great at LT. In fact, I'm not half as good in LT as I was in Base. I'm also good at games like Chess and Civilization, and any game that offers discreet support classes. For other people, it's the opposite. As far as things like twitch reflexes are concerned, they're ceiling is so high as to be out-of-reach in a game like Base. They are the types of people who are great at games like Quake and SC2 (strategy game? yes. But check these guys APM. It's insane.).

Different games for different people. So get the fuck over it.
