[T:V] Plasma Gun and Indoor Maps

Hi, I'm writing this thread sort of in response to an old thread which was discussing the lack of usefulness of the Plasma Gun. Unfortunately that thread's title was "Missle launcher in T3...." and so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping that one.

The Plasma Gun in T1 was great for killing people indoors. Ever play Arena Under the Hill (AUTH) in Arena game type? I used plasma (and grenades) almost exclusively on that map. I consider the Plasma Gun in T1 to be one of the most effective close combat killers (especially against heavies, although no one uses it -- not even me -- for this purpose, probably because the Chaingun and Grenade Launcher are more useful "general use" weapons), and it is incredibly fun to use once you get the hang of it.

In all honestly, if I had to choose a "most fun" weapon in T1, it would probably be the Plasma Gun, and I would most likely also consider it the weapon that required the "most skill." I would be sad to hear that the Plasma Gun is not making a return in T:V.

That being said, I know most people are not fans of indoor maps, but I for one would like to see more of them, both for CTF and Arena -- it would at least be something different. I also think a major reason why many people do not like indoor maps is because of a lack of experience and exposure to them.

Anyways, your thought welcome as always, thanks.

If you're gonna rant, rant about something that's actually in T:V. Plasma Gun was axed a long time ago. The first weapon we heard about was the burner, which is its replacement.

While the plasma gun may or may not be in T:V I do agree that there should be large base interiors in the game.

I think they should keep the flag stands open and allow the LD/Cappers and stuff a fast paced game, but also make large bases to keep base rapers/base defenders interested. No more DC-style clusterfuck bases please ;).

As a side note, I thought the base on Thin Ice was one of the best bases concieved in any game. Even though it was an interior, it was completely three dimensional and allowed for interesting base raping strategies. Its too bad you couldnt ski on the map, and the flag placeement was god awful because I LOVED that base.

EDIT: And also dont include any snowblind style bases. Those types of bases were terrible because once you got in, you could spam everyone to hell at its single choke-point.

Didn't know it was gone :(

Wasn't the plasma gun said to be an imperial weapon in T1? It would make no sense to remove it then IMO if the Empire is going to be in the game.

IMO, the plasma gun was an all purpose weapon. Not too many people would use it outdoors but I always carried it since it worked great in most situations. The only time it didn't work well was on long shots.

Nothing wrong with SB bases, you just need to place more effort on stopping HO from getting in. And you can cluster on any map(almost) regardless of base type. I remember -W- just decided to cluster RD for a match, 2 home LD and the rest O, just pass and escort. The value of a base will be dictated by playstyle, not how easy/hard it is to rape.

Plasma > * indoors. Arena for life.

The main thing about the SB base is that the HO don't have to get in. They can drop a few mortars and grenades into the base and then occupy the inv room.

Wayyyyyy back in the day when I was a newbie I owned at blastside and broadside on newbie servers with my shieldpack & plasma gun. Started at the top of the base and once I got inside I was unstoppable. Shield pack & Plasma = ultimate light base infiltration. oh yeah, worked in scarabae too unless someone was actually defending in Heavy w/ a mortar.

i guess a flame thrower would be good for the timeline T:V is 400 years b4 tribes if im not mistaken,
but ya i would like to see plasma in TV

There is no logical reason for them not have the plasma. Its been in both previous games and taking it out would be like taking out the gernade laucher or even the chain gun.

I was talking more along the lines of having maps that are *entirely* indoors, not just a small portion a la Snow Blind, Ice Dagger, et al (yay I used "a la" and "et al" in the same sentence :D). I don't think I played Thin Ice very much, so I can't comment on its design, but it is possible to have a large *indoor* area that allows cappers to have their fun. I think one of the most important points in making an indoor map is to not make it so constrictive that a player *must* go in a particular direction. As long as the capper has multiple directions from which to enter and exit through, much fun can be had :)

If ever you fire up Arena, check out Arena Under the Hill (AUTH). I thought that map had excellent design -- it had 3 different ways a player could get from one side of the base to the other side, and also has larger, "open" indoor areas. It was great for Arena, but perhaps the map's smaller size is not suitable for the larger number of players in most CTF games. Perhaps if the dimensions of AUTH were extended a bit (or a lot), it would make for a great CTF map as well.

As Doaln said, I had a tremendous amount of fun attacking or defending the bases in Blast/BroadSide and Scarabae using the Plasma Gun and Shield Pack, back in the day. I would love to see more maps in that vein (and also some completely indoor maps). The two major flaws of Scarabae and B*Side imo; the bases were too far away in Scarabae, and there were only two, much too easily defendable entrances in B*Side.

Well, I'm glad to hear that Ixiterra's statement was based on a misunderstanding. :) Hope someone "official" can make a statement about this ;)

I think indoor combat in general has something special to offer tribes, and any way it can be implemented I am for it.

There is nothing fun about getting your spawn point spammed.

That's because no one said it is. Ixiterra is just stating his own misunderstanding.

Pfft.

I'm sorry Apoth, let me rephrase my statement:

If you're gonna rant, rant about something that's actually has more than one infitium chance of being in T:V. Plasma Gun was put on the "gazillion to one chance of returning to the game" a long time ago. The first weapon we heard about was the burner, which has about a 10 googol to 1 odds of being its replacement.

Oh yeah and another problem on one of the B*Side maps was the mortar turret on the front of the base, which made it much to tempting to spam the bottom entrance of the enemy base.

I did a search on both "burner" and "plasma" but found nothing relevant. Do you remember when/where such a statement was made by someone "official"? Link if available?

edit: just found this -- http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=223575 Interesting.
