I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

Goshin, I fully embrace the idea of new self sufficient technology but the idea of a solar road being able to self heat itself through a weekend blizzard of 20+ inches just doesn't seem feasible to me. Would there be battery packs set to store up the energy to heat these roads???

It wouldnt be hard to tell where the the grid was absorbing less sunlight and needed a cleaning.

the idea is, eventually these roads would be hooked up nationwide, so if a blizzard hit the northeast, power traveling through the grid the next state over with sun can be utilized to heat the roads that aren't getting any sun

that's the huge picture
smaller scale, two counties over is a blizzard, but the sun is out for now here in town X.
The roads send their excess energy to heat the roads in the blizzard effected area, thus melting snow/ice

love the concept drawing Trojanman

the roads would generate electricty for cities as well
and be LED lit instead of paint and reflector based
and charge electric cars as they travel over them

it's a long term, really great concept

i hope the prototype and early build out confirm things and deal with some problems brought up here

(oil slicks, road scum, solar effeciency over time)

this idea will be obsolete when flying cars come into production

This idea will take longer to ****ing design and implement than flying cars.

the idea has been designed
they're building the prototype to be installed this spring

try again

Same goes for the jetpack, in fact its development is at a far more advanced stage than that, but I won't be commuting to work in one any time soon. I think you know what I meant.

not really
making a flying jetpack that is stable and has fuel capacity to not kill you is a lot harder than perfecting a driveable surface that collects energy via solar panel technology already developed

plus, where's the market for a jetpack for reals?

It's right there on the same page as the market for really ridiculously expensive glass roads that conduct electricity across long distances.

road, power grid, power station, data network grid, no more snow plows

i think all that is more than worth 4.4 million a mile

I'm going to have to stop trying to reason with you now and go to bed. I'll come back to the thread tomorrow and see if you've really thought this one through.

high speed data connections to every home and business, new power lines (very hugely needed) to every home and business, mainly from power that was created/contained miles from the home (no huge long distance transmission for most power requirements since the powerplant is the road next to your house),
easy drop and play pre-fab 12x12 roadways, much safer roads that can change the LEDS to let you know about accidents in x lane (no more cones and long traffic delays of removing said cones), and to light the roads an lane markings, and a way to charge your electric car while driving

high upfront cost (maybe), huge long term gain

huge
Even if we did it for major cities only and then strands out for highways, leaving most rural roads alone, we'd see a big impact
