[Google] Shit's getting real in China.

Is the claim that the hacking was done by the chinese government itself?
That's the implication, definitely. The Chinese government employs both in-house and freelance hackers for government and corporate espionage. They control hundreds of hackers, botnets, and corporate spies. This isn't even rumor mongering or hearsay, it is pretty well known, but no one has really dared to call them out on it.

They've initiated several high-profile attacks against businesses and even the US government in the past. It's part of their overall strategy against more developed nations in case of war. Instead of beating us in technology, they would attempt to bring down as much of ours as possible. They're also trying very hard to steal intellectual property and hide behind nationalistic flag-waving and a facade of propaganda to deflect international criticism.

At this point, entire nations lack the guts to stand up to the Chinese government over these matters, since they're a huge emerging economic powerhouse and superpower. Every time corruption, humans rights violations, or espionage is unearthed, someone will call them out and the Chinese government immediately goes on the offensive. They'll grand-stand, stir up nationalism, and generally throw outlandish accusations left and right until people shut up and sit down.

It's like the bully in grade-school that would steal your juice in front of everyone, teachers included, and shout "WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT, HUH?"

Now Google, the little weedy nerd, has stood up and said "I'M GOING TO POOP ON YOUR CHEST. THAT'S WHAT I'M GOING TO DO ABOUT IT" and the rest of the world is collectively going "OOOOooooOOOOooooHHHHhhhh." Whether or not the US government chooses to actively support this move remains to be seen.

tl;dr haiku -

The bully talks big
Little Google big China
Nerds are throwing down

handy bit of code:

Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
my @page = `GET http://cgi.apnic.net/apnic-bin/ipv4-by-country.pl?country=cn`;

foreach (@page) {
        if ($_ =~/^<td>(\d+)(\.\d+)?(\.\d+)?(\.\d+)?(\/\d+)/) {
                my $a=$1;
                my $b=$2;
                my $c=$3;
                my $d=$4;
                if ($a=="") {$a="0"}
                if ($b=="") {$b=".0"}
                if ($c=="") {$c=".0"}
                if ($d=="") {$d=".0"}

                print "$a$b$c$d$5\n";
        }
}

Takes the webpage seen at Displaying IPv4 ranges matching 'cn'
and returns something like
Code:
110.6.0.0/15
110.16.0.0/14
110.40.0.0/14
110.48.0.0/16
110.51.0.0/16
110.52.0.0/15
110.56.0.0/13
110.64.0.0/15
110.72.0.0/15
110.75.0.0/16
...
except there's 906 lines (at this point in time.)

that's 906 networks.

Pair that up with:

# for i in `china.pl`; do iptables -A CHINA -s $i -j DROP; done
# iptables -I INPUT <wherever> -j CHINA

stick that line in after your basic blocking and before you start accepting things, and voila! China no longer exists on the internet!

They're also trying very hard to steal intellectual property and hide behind nationalistic flag-waving and a facade of propaganda to deflect international criticism.

Yep, I read an article about this yeeeaaars ago in the wsj. I was kinda pissed we never really fought back (to my knowledge).

all chinese built computerS are preprogrammed with code that, when activated by the chinese goverment, will automatically download the harddrive's contects to the chinese. the american military , fbi and cia have thousands of these computers

AND THEIRS NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT
