Man, don't even get me started on farming. I think one of the biggest problems in this country is the loss of farmers. Or, their transition into the "services" sector.

If you take a peek at census data you will find information like this:

You will find that we used to have a very high percentage of farmers. That has diminished greatly.

Here is a fact about the majority of farmers around the world: They are good people. They are hard workers. They don't have time to mess around. They are up early and get to bed early. They are more connected to nature. They respect their neighbors and mostly follow the rules. They are trusting. Once befriended, they are friends for life.

There are many reasons why farms in the USA have failed. Why the number of farmers has diminished. Why once thriving towns have been boarded up and the people moved away.

In my opinion, the loss of the American farmer has greatly impacted our country in ways that most people don't realize.

Sure, go ahead and make fun of the farmers. Call them rednecks, yahoos, clodhoppers and all the rest. But, remember - these are solid Americans. They live different lives than people from the city. Many of our soldiers in WWII and beyond came from farming country. They are some of our best on the battlefield. They are the grunts in the trenches and the ones ready to jump in and do whatever was needed. They can shoot. They are easy to command and well disciplined. They are trustworthy and predictable.

Huge swaths of the center of the USA are disappearing due to corporate takeover of our farmland and a transition to a more technically focused economy.

Promote farming and those who take care of the farms is like an insurance policy. I think it's in our national interest to have a solid agricultural base. Not only for sustenance but for the kind of people that farming communities produce.

If we are going to subsidize anything, I have very little heartburn over subsidizing farmers and farming. I am not a fan of subsidizing or bailing out corporate farming but I would love to see a resurgence in true-blue, down to earth, small American farming. It's a healthy lifestyle and produces salt-of-the-earth people. The communities that spring up around farming areas are great places to live.
