.rec files

I found a folder of .rec's that I haven't seen on youtube yet from the glory days of tribes. Is the only way to make them into movies still an application like FRAPS?

Yeah you'd have to use fraps. Rec files are essentially recordings of network traffic so the game engine itself is the only way to turn that into a video.
