Cataclysm Beta, and the keyloggers fury renews.

Feannag

Seems to be about an hour or so after they announced it, and already my gmail spam filter has caught four emails professing to be beta invites. One was attempting to claim my account would be suspended, give that guy credit the email looks pretty pro, and the other three were "beta invites".

Looks like the sites are getting hammered pretty fucking hard too, didn't think people would get fanatic about it but I guess not.

I got one claiming someone was disputing the e-mail on the account or something. It made it past gmail's filters and was even suggesting that you login and check the status of your account on the website. Of course the links in the email to the official website were bogus.

It was very convincing looking.

Sorry bout the link, thanks for the edit. But yeah they're getting very convincing nowadays. Usually in my inbox if it says Blizzard Entertainment its the real thing. But usually the emails from blizzard isn't just one block of paragraph.

The links to "http://us.battle.net" and "http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account/security/" were both actually to a page on "hXXp://blizzard.account-issue.com". Even the last "www.worldofwarcraft.com" link was legit.

They are convincing looking nowadays, but that's why you get an authenticator just to be safe. The only time I ever get emails from them are notices from paid services like transfers and once about a loot issue, which they put in my in-game mailbox anyway.

I use a separate email only for wow....so it's pretty obvious when I get these fake emails on my main email account that blizzard doesn't even know. Still I get tons of them. I think I've seen every one posted in this thread so far.

Dear customer,

Due to suspicious activity, the Battle.net account *******@******** has been locked. You logined your account successfully at 7:19:29 on 2010-8-5 from the 180.122.42.11, but our system shows this IP isn't your registered IP. We are concerned about whether your account has been stolen. In order to guarantee the legitimacy of your account, we need you follow these steps:

Step 1: Secure Your Computer

In the event that your computer has been infected with malicious software such as a keylogger or trojan, simply changing your password may not deter future attacks without first ensuring that your computer is free from these programs. Please visit our Account Security website to learn how to secure your computer from unauthorized access.

Step 2: Secure Your E-mail Account

After you have secured your computer, check your e-mail filters and rules and look for any e-mail forwarding rules that you did not create. For more information on securing your e-mail account, visit our Support page.

Step 3: Restore access to Your account

We now provide a secure website for you to verify whether you have taken the appropriate steps to secure the account, your computer, and your email address. Please follow this site to restore the access to your account: Battle.net Account Login

If you still have questions or concerns after following the steps above, feel free to contact Customer Support at Blizzard Support.

Sincerely,
The Battle.net Account Team

You logined your account

Dead giveaway in the very first line.

Then if you go and hover over the links in the message, it's always some fakeass URL like support.blizzard.restoreaccess.us...

I don't get how so many fucking retards are falling for it. People can't be that stupid. Not that many people. Somebody, please restore my faith in humanity. :(

I just view details instantly on all of them to see it's from hotmail.com. I still read them though. Some of them are really clever, but there is always the fact it's from hotmail, and the links all go to bogus sites. The simple tip from Blizzard that they will never ask for your password is enough to ignore anything asking for such. Too bad that doesn't stop a lot of people still.
