In the next month or so I want to pick up a precision bolt action rifle in the $800-$1100 range. I already have a few optics picked out, but I am torn on which rifle I should get. My front runners are:

Bergara B14 HMR
Ruger Precision
Remington 700 PCR

I am looking at these in .308 for a few reasons. Cost of ammo (I don't load my own brass) and ranges I shoot at. The range I usually go to has a max of 100 yards. Another one nearby goes out to 600 max. If I had the chance to regularly shoot passed 600 yards I'd get the 6.5 Creedmoor in a heartbeat, but it seems like a waste to me with my options. Anyone have any experience with these rifles or have another suggestion?

TLDR: Merica!

700s are awesome with lots of options. Well, let me rephrase this - they USED to be awesome. Quality issues have crept in. You have three great choices there.

If it was me? I'd get a Thompson center in 308 which is around 300 bucks and comes pre-threaded for a suppressor - spend the extra money on a suppressor and there ya go.

Anyway - good luck!

(Comes in .308)

I've got a Remington 700 in 30.06, walnut stock. It's a really nice rifle.

But I don't love it like my Lee-Enfield No 4 Mk I.

Are you buying a bolt action for exclusive use on the range? At least shoot some animals.

I just grabbed up a 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger Precision. At least around me the ammo is within a few cents difference. (Bud's seems to be a few cents diff too from 308)

The R700 will need a lot of upgrades to be in the same category as the others. The R700 can't do barrel swaps near as easy either.

I was going between the BA Stealth and the RPR.

Out of curiosity which optics are you looking at?

Get the one with the shortest barrel, saves you having to try to pull the trigger with your toes.

The yardage thing makes me wonder... Yeah the 6.5 is a bit better but only if you are shooting out past 1000 yards. I am not everyone but I will say hitting at 1000 is a bit of a task for most people.

IMO, .308 is way overkill for 600 yards the same way 6.5 is so get what makes you happy not what you think it more appropriate for 600 yards..

I can hit 900 yards about 75%.. depending on factors and day... with my .308. My friend that I shoot with has a 6.5 and I get the same results. 6.5 is more comfortable to shoot but we are talking a minimum amount.

My friend can hit past 1000.. 1230 is his best. He does better with his 6.5 than his .308 for that distance.

I've never shot that distance. How much adjustment is necessary to compensate for that much drop? Do you sit there for 3 minutes clicking the scope?

900 is about 35 minutes of up from zero plus kentucky windage so depends on the scope but I can dial in 35 pretty quick..

I should say I have a 20 MOA rail so that takes a few of clicks out. I wouldn't use a 20 for under say 700 yards unless you are limited by your scope

For what you want to do any heavy barrelled .308 will be fine. I'd just go with a 700 since you're going to replace the trigger and stock anyway. For those distances you really won't a very expensive optic either. Really good quality glass only pays for itself over 1000 meters.
If it was my money I'd go with a 6.5x47 Lapua. In the 300 - 1000 meter range you would be hard pressed to find a better competition/tactical cartridge.

What SuperTrap is really saying is he hits maybe 3 of 10 with proper aim and shakes 4 in with some devine intervention...sorry dude but 1000 meters is not that tough a shot with optics.

I use to shoot service rifle matches with open sights to 900 yards and hit better than 70% FFS.

I would also admit even in my youth I couldn't hit 900 open sites though. So well done on that part
