[got haggis] Star wars battlefront 2 micro transactions backfire

im not sure how people too stupid to manage video games or money need to affect my life, or anyone elses

First of all I’m not sure how lootboxes effect your life and 2nd we unfortunately live in a society which means different people will have different competencies, putting legitimate gambling in video games that kids can play is no good for anyone involved. I can guarantee you we wouldn’t be having this conversation if you could just buy the skins outright. Ygranted, csgo has this problem and you can buy whichever skin you want from the marketplace, but most of the csgo controversy had to do with gambling skins on matches or coin flips on 3rd party sites

Why do anything when we can all be perfect beings with perfect reasoning

The point is you can have the government or someone else crack down on each and every single possible way someone could get your kid's money...

or you could teach them about it.

Lootboxes do impact those of us who don't buy them. Games with lootboxes get cheaper or even free DLC. Without lootboxes, do you think Blizzard keeps adding characters to Overwatch? Maybe but probably not.

So, instead of me having to shell out money for "expansions", I profit off people paying the stupid tax. Someone is going to benefit from stupid people, may as well be me. :)

Yeah, cause there's nothing inherently wrong with conditioning children into gambling. It's not like it could lead to an addiction later on or anything.

While we're at it, why the fuck is tobacco age-restricted, anyway? Parents can just tell their kids it's bad, right? Fucking nanny state.

Games with lootboxes get cheaper? On what fucking planet do u live on? I want to go there where my $70+ game doesn’t require hundreds of additional dollars to unlock all of the costumes already included on the disk

if you want to deem it gambling, then all we need to do is prevent the sale of gamecards that provide in game currency

otherwise, how are children buying anything?

If it’s deemed gambling, then why do we allow children to play at all? They can’t go in casinos

I've never paid a dime in Overwatch beyond the initial price.

This "already included on disk" is the mental defect they exploit. Why do I care how many Overwatch skins there are?

Why do you "have" to have them? Why are you getting screwed without them?

The minute you unlock a skin, it loses all value and you move on to wanting the next one.

That's just a fallacy where you observe that OW has loot boxes. Blizzard releases regular content without charging for it. Therefore, we wouldn't have free content without loot boxes.

I'd like to point out that Blizzard does not release games without a planned 10 year life cycle. They're not EA; They don't release 'annual' titles. When Blizzard releases a title, they'll continue to support it for years. I don't know the figures on SC2 but I would bet that their expansion and DLC model did not generate cash on the same levels as HS/HotS/OW.

With that in mind, like Ztir mentions; you can support a game with a cash shop that does not include the loot box gamble. Put every cosmetic up for a fixed value and let players purchase them directly. Heroes of the storm had this model; the game continued to release content for free. LoL has had this model for years; one of the largest grossing games in the world.

Speaking of Hots; Their cash shop was revamped to mimic Overwatch's loot box monetization. Why? Because it makes more money. Turns out the average spender will spend MORE if you put the items they want behind a lottery system. And you defend it as if they're doing us a favor.

These publishers want the conversation to be about 'p2w vs cosmetic loot boxes' because it gets people (happily) accepting cosmetic loot boxes.

Check out EA's new UFC 3, it makes the BF 2 loot system look like it was designed by an elementary school class.

The "loot" includes things that temporarily give you more endurance, take less damage, do more damage, etc.

Keep buyin' them advantages if you want to win. $$$
