One thing to watch with braid vs mono is you will tend to lose a lot more fish on the initial hit. There is no give in the system and you often pull the lure straight out of their mouth. Braid is great for feeling delicate takes on soft plastics but I still prefer mono for hard body lures - or you get a rod with a medium to slow action for hardbodies and that gives you a nice shock absorber. Fast actioned rods are great for feel but not so good for fighting the fish.

Sounds like you're confusing the action of the rod with the power of the rod. They can differ. You're right in saying that a medium action rod is perfect for crank baits but that's because you're not really setting the hook. You usually have tr-hooks.

I went this morning with 2 poles.. one with braided and a small real trout swimbait. I actually got a hit on it but only the tail and never hooked it. Holy **** its like a freight train compaired to mono. I couldt belive how hard it felt and he didnt even hook.

i did land a 1lber with my other pole that i ran 10lb moss green mono for my first time. she wasnt that much a fight kinda swam towards me and she set herself.

i have to say for the area i live in with 2 lakes within 15 mins of my house and something like 5 really good ones within 30- 1 hr...i am loving this big mouth hunting. such a fun fish.
i keep hearing storys of spawning season... i cant wait.
Spawning season is great! .... and it's illegal to fish bass during spawn here in Canada. Really, it should be banned everywhere. It's stupid to fish during mating season because you want to protect the longevity of the fishery. Even if you're a Catch and Release guy like I am, when you hook a fish off the spawning bed then they end up abandoning their nest.

Nope - even a light power rod with a fast action will pull way more hooks than a slow actioned will. The parabolic action makes them very forgiving. Also a big benefit when they take a final lunge at the boat. Compare a Loomis smallmouth bronzeback rod 4-8lb xfast to daiwa presso iprimi 4lb. The presso is slightly lighter in power but also has a medium action and it is like using a limp noodle. The loomis picks up small takes on the drop but the presso stays connected way better esp with hardbodies.

The action of a rod only dictates where the bend is. The faster the action the higher up on the rod it is. The power is what determines the size of the line it can handle, as I understan dit.

A fast action rod is perfect for fighting bass, but poor for head shakers like pike. So you really should specify this and not generalize because it's not right.

When you fish a texas rig or carolina rig or even a football jig you really want something that can set the hook hard because bass ball up soft plastics on the take so you sometimes have to drive the hook through plastic to get to fish jaw. If you try to fish soft plastics with a medium action you won't get as many hooks because you lack that ability to really drive the hook in.

What do I know, though? I use a fly rod now. It's totally different. Ever bring in a bass on the fly rod? now that's a fight!

wait what! Why would you buy a spincaster? You taking some kids fishing? I'd save your money! They aren't bad in a way, but they tend to fail more often. Even moreso than spinner reels and that's often enough if you ask me.

Actually more than anything, I need something I need something with a good intake per rotation for things like sonic spinners or rooster tails. I had a little kit, but a particular lunker ruined my reel, and damaged the rod enough that the next smallmouth snapped my rod.

Thread needs more photos of fish.

About a 3-4lb Dolly Varden I caught on the Cheakamus River a while back on a gold Colorado spoon.

I was going to mention that.
I'm well aware of how rod action works as distinct from rod power. I have over 50 rods from 40 year old solid glass to the latest Hardy & Loomis carbon (I also have fly gear but never use it)

We don't get bass where I live - not US style bass anyway

and funnily - I just bought a spincast combo this week. Really nice daiwa all metal construction should last a long time if it doesn't get dropped in sand. I did however buy it so my 4yr old can throw lures more easily than using her sidecast reel.

the stupid mechanism on those spincasts is what breaks. I'm pretty hard on my gear though because you have to reel in super fast once you hook in or risk getting tangled up in the weeds of the channels/marsh.

I went through two spinner reels (I really liked Shimano's Spirex) before I switched to a baitcaster, which seems to be 100% more sturdy than any other reel.

Now I am fishing with an Orvis Clearwater IV. I never had to put a fish on the reel though.

Gear ratio lets you know how much cranking power you have. To see how fast your lure will retrieve you need to also look at spool diameter so you can work out inches of line retrieved per handle turn. Baitcasters generally have smaller spools than spin reels so need a higher ratio for the same retrieve speed. I wouldn't worry too much unless you are trying to specialise.
You are probably overthinking it.

Best thing to do is go to a local tackle shop and tell them where you fish and what baits/lures you prefer and what your budget is. $200 would get you a reasonably good quality combo

was a frustrating week fishing but mostly my own fault. fishing off the dock when i hook up a good sized catfish. 5-6lb or so. got it to the dock and asked a kid who was about 10 to hand me my net. well he starts trying to net the fish for me. being the nice guy that i am i figure what the hell ill let him get it. he misses the fish on the first go and it dives so i have to let it run and get it back. he then almost tangles my line into the net on the 2nd go. same thing again. 3rd time he hits the fish in the head with the side of the net and it shakes the hook and i loose it .

well lesson learned.. i am no longer letting any random kids help me land a fish.

another morning i show up to the dock and its absolutely boiling all around with large splashes. i was already set up for drop shot so i cast out and hook up on first cast... it feels like a good size fish... then it breached the water did a barrel roll and shook my hook mid air. he looked to be a 4-5lb bass. SOAB that woulda been the biggest bass i have caught. Ohh well at least i got to see it.

im sure i will have many more "big fish that got away" storys. but anyhow caught a lot of guys like this....

and my daughter caught her first fish ever... a 1lb catfish.
