[movie/book] Annihilation - Southern Reach Trilogy

Got Haggis?

Veteran XX
So did anyone read the Southern Reach series? The first book, Annihilation, was definitely the best in the series. I couldn't believe they made it into a movie, so I had to see it. For the most part its faithful to the book..that is until the end

and that kind of sucks, because that was my favorite part of the book - very lovecraftian. That being said, the changes they did make were still a bit of a mindfuck....it reminded me of 2001 in many respects. Overall the movie had the vibe of mother! and The Witch...so if you hated those movies (and haven't read the book), I 'm guessing you will hate this as well.

It is going straight to Netflix in the UK....and is releasing there in like 2 weeks. So it should be in "stores" quite soon

I can't take Natalie Portman seriously as either a scientist or an action hero.

the movie was awful. there's a scene that every review is bringing up that i didnt even blink at.

great performances, and there was a decent 30 minute "down the river" remix of apocalypse now. unfortunate everything else in the film was a pretentious wanna-be mindfuck convoluted can of asininity

there's a reason this film was released in the middle of butt fuck February and sold to netflix

portman was great in black swan, phenomenal film

Is something missing in your spoiler? I don't understand the reference.

there's a specific scene referenced in basically every review as the cherry ontop of annihiliations proverbial shit sundae. i didn't explictly explain what it was but anyone that has seen it will immediately identify it. my spoiler references a world-reknowned scene from a classic film that sets the bar for the type of scene the shit sundae cherry attempts to mimic.

if you want here is the scene

Sorry, I'm just having a difficult time following you. You're saying all the reviews reference a scene as if it's amazing but it's been done dozens of times over the last 40 years?

they're not all saying the scene is amazing, but almost every review is referencing it as one of the aspects in annihiliation that stands out the most, its most memorable set piece

i'm saying its the same kind of scene found in
Spoiler
and its crap compared to those two.

Just saw, it was good. Took some liberties with the story, but overall stays pretty true to the sentiment of the book.

Never read the book, but just saw it and thought it was pretty good. It kept me interested the whole way through. I feel like it did a pretty good job because now I do want to read the book.

Book series was weird, all 3 books were very different. The movie has me curious.

I think I liked the books, but I haven't completely decided yet. It has been months since I finished the series.

The first book is hands down the best. Second book is very very slow, but necessary to explain the back story and surrounding context. Third book is good, not on the level of the first, but does enough to give a satisfying end (though it isn't super straight forward).

Movie has almost zero dialogue, scenes, etc, from the book. I think due to the fact they weren't going to make a trilogy, the story line got simplified. The general feeling of the books come across well, though like the OP says couple big things that were missing that I was hoping to see.
