Wasn't he thought to be inspired by some real historical figure who was a badass in youth, but came out of retirement to join a war in his 70s and still kick ass?

why are we not talking about the biggest reveal in GoT history?
SpoilerR+L=J confirmed!
ThanksSpoilerYeah show didn't confirm R+L=J, just started dropping the same hints that were in the book. Seems like the most likely outcome at this point though, and makes the most sense for the narrative.
did he definitely die though? i mean it looks like it from next weeks preview, but i dunno, could be a misdirection
Book spoilers:
SpoilerI assume this season will end with Dany flying on Drogon as a bit of a cliffhanger. Barristan didn't really do much after her departure, other than conspire with characters that aren't on the show to keep her new husband in check. She might not even remarry on the show, and it's basically out of character for Barristan to be a conspirator anyway. It's easy to eliminate him from the show, have his role continued by Jorah, and give an exciting midseason moment for show viewers. It's a disappointment for book readers, but it's understandable. I'm still hopelessly wishing that they'll introduce Strong Belwas as a pitfighter in the next few episodes and Dany will be so impressed she'll bring him on as a bodyguard.
Spoilera small belwas arc would be some nice fanservice. Question: If Jon dies and is brought back to life is his oath to the night's watch satisfied and he can go do as he pleases? What do you think show Reek's reason for existance is? redemption?
