Well it's that or no one plays the game since there wouldn't be a free-to-play option.

As much as a loathe F2P, no one but the most established franchises can get away with pay-and-play these days. You need the ease of access to entice new players to take a look. And we vets need the warm bodies to keep the user base above critical mass.

All told, Archetype has gone about it in a sensible manner. Pay $20, get everything unlocked forever. And there are no individual weapons to buy, so that it doesn't repeat some of the (many) mistakes of TA and power creep.

Not enough old players and not enough new players so CTF is not fun to play by yourself and running around just deathmatching isn't much fun when 9/10 players are just seals waiting to be clubbed.

That's equivalent to watching a rando in a CTF pub in 2000 - not really representative of what's probably more appealing to you now - I linked to Stork's vid in OP which is more representative of the pace.

Agreed - I get zero enjoyment out of regular CTF. A lot of the people who enjoyed the game before release are usually referring to the LCTF pickups which are like playing a totally different game.
