Untrue. Prior to 1070 there was no state law that made illegal immigration a crime, and thus state LE wasn't able to enforce anything regarding illegal immigration.
Now they can punish you, although the amended bill drastically reduces the scope of available punishments (it struck out all felonies!).
Eventually, I suspect the state will be forced to pay the court costs of some legal citizens who claim that the officer used race in excess of "what is allowable under the United States and Arizona constitutions" and eventually the entire section about law enforcement officers checking legal status will get tossed.
They'll probably switch to just checking the legal status of -all- people who are arrested and then punishing them for trespass upon the jail (hah!) since they're illegally in the country and it's a publicly owned building.
