I waited for a bit on season 2, and maybe it was because of all the negative press for season 2 that I had such low expectations that it was easy to pass that bar.
But for me it had moments of brilliance, but did have faults.
S1 was dark and gritty with excellent characters, moments of redemption, existential questions, and a satisfying ending that was perfect for the story.
S2, from what I remember, didn't have any characters that I rooted for. It was incredibly dark, and the more the characters strived forward the darker it got. It was so overwhelmingly dark that by the time it ended I thought it was excellent but I said I never wanted to watch it again. It's so bleak it leaves you with a sense of despair.
That said... there was a moment in season 2, were they rescue someone from a mansion, that was so pulse-poundingly astounding that I couldn't believe that a season had gotten that much hate with those scenes in the show. That even if a show was terrible, those scenes and build up of the tension, would be enough to give it a passing grade. So, I talked to all my friends that hated S2 and none of them even made it to that part of the story.
I haven't started s3.
