Never had heard of this before. Cohen Brother's movie on netflix.
Six short stories set in the western frontier. Has a great cast of characters, witty dialog, and beautiful cinematography. Each story stands on it's own. Other than the west, each story is unique and does not refer to each other.
Chapter 1 - The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Laugh out loud funny, with great dialog and hilarious action. This is the only real comedy bit of the six, and a good way to get things rolling as things take a more darker turn.
Chapter 2 - Near Algodones
This one is also funny, but darker. Pan shot!
Chapter 3 - Meal Ticket
Very melancholy and sad. Not much talking between characters, most of the dialog is theatrical. As the story unfolds you see the relationship dynamics and you begin to feel even worse. My least favorite chapter, it's very depressing.
Chapter 4 - All Gold Canyon
Most beautiful cinematography of the six short stories. Not a lot of dialog, but probably the best character acting. One of my favorite pieces.
Chapter 5 - The Gal Who Got Rattled
Probably my favorite chapter of all of them, with the exception of chapter 1. The acting and character interaction is terrific, and the short story's twists and turns are just a joy to experience. You really feel for everyone, even the dog. I love this chapter.
Chapter 6 - The Mortal Remains
This reminded me more of a Quentin Tarantino shot chapter, as it is 99% extended dialog between five characters riding in a stagecoach. Extremely well acted with very interesting conversations as they journey to their final destination. You kind of get the idea of where the story is going about mid-way though, but it's still delightful nevertheless.
I love this movie. Very cohen-esque. If you like their other movies, like Oh Brother, you'll appreciate this very much. Give it a solid 4 out of 5.
