[so] There's a 12' x 12' deck next to the 3 season room, it was feeling a little spongy so I got under it and whoever built it didn't use ground contact wood for the framing.

Ended up jacking up the deck and puling out all the rotten wood and replacing it with AC ground contact lumber. The decking was still ok, so I ripped the old 2x10's out and pounded all 510+ nails up from the bottom. 12 foot x 3 (2x4) per foot = 36 x 2 nails x 7 joists = 504 nails but most had 3 nails...

i prefer the .22 ones that go pop when you drive em. if you're doing shingles you need a roofing license. and maybe one for the .22 nail primer.

@plasmatic
what would the ultimate benefit be of having a waffle faced hammer?

does driving the nail not slip?
does it make the nail more flush with the surface of the wood?

what is so special about that hammer?

Nails don't skip sideways even if you're off center or hitting the pointy end.

The right tool makes all the difference in the world. Think about your purses. You probably have your favorites for different occasions, it's the same with hammers. Your purses vary in size, weight, number of pockets, flaps and styles but you have your favorites. I have probably 30 hammers, but I use 5-10 pretty regularly, and this one just made the cut.

oh man did i party foul yesterday

i had my 16 gauge 21 degree pneumatic nailer out and somehow hit the corner of my lever bar i was using to align a broken deck board with (that I used the nailer to fasten)

it could have been so much worse but the end result is it felt like i took an aluminum baseball bat to a metal pole at about 200 mph. the resonance that reverberated through my body made my arm numb for well over ten minutes.

small price to pay for being so dumb, for not seeing it change directions, to not see it ricochet, but certainly made me pay attention to what i was doing again.

so very true

you don't often realize this until you find the right tool for the job and get forced to go back to something you know isn't nearly as good again

why do i need so many crowbars my gf says.......

i tell her this isn't even the beginning. once you include the smaller varieties for trim, nail pulling, etc, you need a few of each to renovate a roof or room addition.

There is something really satisfying about driving 12p spikes into wood with a hammer.
