got the chance to do a day trip to Catalina island and do a little fishing. i brought a mackerel that i caught 2 days before and some shrimp. only brought my bait pole so i was only actively targeting the small stuff.
i would sink my bait and before it could hit the bottom i had bites if not a hook up. in like 45 mins i got 8 fish and i spent more time baiting my line then line actually in the water.
Wrasse male and female...
baby sheephead
Garibaldi which is the california state fish and is highly protected... if seen holding one fore more then 29 seconds its a fine.
i also caught some really tiny calico bass.
then the sea lion came in and would stay about 3 feet from my bait and circle... as soon as i hooked up a fish he grabbed it and started running with my line. took me about 150 yards out into the ocean then snapped the sabinki line and we watched him eat my fish.
it was a small fish day but it was fun as hell. i learned some things and next time i will bring my bait pole and my shark setup and go for some bigger fish by catching live mackerel and using them as bait.
good times and if you ever go bring a pole the fish are hungry there.
