ive caught 15lb albacore and those are 1000x funner then 3lb trout to me. that shark i hooked up was way funner. i get what you are saying tho. on a ultralight rod with 2lb test catching a 5lb trout was pretty awesome and way funner then some of the heavier sting rays i have got on ocean setups.

got the chance to do a day trip to Catalina island and do a little fishing. i brought a mackerel that i caught 2 days before and some shrimp. only brought my bait pole so i was only actively targeting the small stuff.

i would sink my bait and before it could hit the bottom i had bites if not a hook up. in like 45 mins i got 8 fish and i spent more time baiting my line then line actually in the water.
Wrasse male and female...

baby sheephead

Garibaldi which is the california state fish and is highly protected... if seen holding one fore more then 29 seconds its a fine.

i also caught some really tiny calico bass.
then the sea lion came in and would stay about 3 feet from my bait and circle... as soon as i hooked up a fish he grabbed it and started running with my line. took me about 150 yards out into the ocean then snapped the sabinki line and we watched him eat my fish.

it was a small fish day but it was fun as hell. i learned some things and next time i will bring my bait pole and my shark setup and go for some bigger fish by catching live mackerel and using them as bait.

good times and if you ever go bring a pole the fish are hungry there.

My brother is insanely passionate about flyfishing. I cant really understand it. The river where we live is kind of famous throughout the years but come on. Standing waist deep for 6 hrs not catching anything. I mean the trip itself, camping by the river, sure. Standing like a dumbass in the middle of the river? Not so much

yea i always enjoy catching more then fishing but that is not a requirement for me to enjoy myself.

today a guy on a boat with a fly rod caught a 6.5 lb bass on 2lb line. we watched him fighting it for a good 30 mins. he was 1.5lb off of the record for line and fly rod.

Awesome thread.

Arak is right, deep sea fishing is not all that much fun (until you get something - if you get something) we went in Aruba, spent 3 hours, not a nibble, then right at the end landed a Yellowfin Tuna (beautiful fish) - about 30-40lb as well.

i eat a lot of them... this was the first one of this species i have caught and i thought it was under limit so i threw it back.. then i was told i could have kept it. i hear they are good eating. i definitely would have ate it but it is alive and well in the pacific ocean right now.

been a fairly normal few weeks. catfish limits are common. been catching lots of little boring things like sting rays. Then i went to Catalina island last weekend. had 30lb high vis green line out when i see a giant sea turtle chewing on my line... the last thing i want is to have to deal with getting it free. so i try yanking line and getting the turtle to get away.. it does not leave it alone... so i try reeling in and recasting... it hooks the turtle... DAMMIT!!! it fought like hell and i got it to about a foot away and when i went to grab it it snapped the line. It swam off with no problems... soon enough the hook will rust out and it should be fine. still i was bummed out about it... Then i started hitting Bonito and forgot all about it... some pics...

catfish limit.

sting ray.

Bonito

Only pic of the turtle i got is all washed out but you can see it... this was before he got hooked.
