Are you a sushi snob?
Quote:
A reader once asked Washington Post humorist Gene Weingarten what he was a snob about. His reply, “I am also a snob about food. The other day, in Baltimore, I passed a sign outside a restaurant that said “Sushi Buffet!‘ and laughed out loud because it occurred to me that “sushi” and “buffet” are two words that should never appear together.” His sentiment resonates strongly with sushi aficionados who adhere to the strict rules of etiquette which governs the way in which true sushi snobs enjoy sushi.
It’s a given that a true sushi snob would never eat at an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant nor would such a snob ever be found mingling with the rabble who sit in booths or receive table service. Sushi snobs will only sit at a sushi bar in as close proximity to the sushi chef as possible. They like to converse with the sushi chef, hoping to ingratiate themselves by asking the right questions to demonstrate they are savvy connoisseurs and not “trough-divers” like most of the crowd. They treat the sushi chef like Magellan, their esteemed navigator on a culinary adventure.
Rapport with the chef established, sushi snobs will generally order Omakase, a term which translates literally from Japanese to “It’s up to you.” More specifically, omakase means the menu is left up to the chef. This gives the sushi chef the opportunity to showcase their skills, to serve what they think is good. Omakase tends to be quite expensive, giving the restaurant a nice profit margin. For the true sushi snob, this is all well and good. They accept that being a sushi snob ain’t cheap.

I can't eat supermarket/fast-food style sushi, to me it tastes like ****
however I'm not such a pretentious retard that I won't eat at an "all-you-can-order" sushi place, I'll leave that to the hapless nerds and awkward virgins who try to overcompensate for lack of social skills and sexual prowess by becoming infatuated with some gay food trend to the point of obnoxious pretentiousness

i did the same thing awhile back, having passed a "sushi buffet" sign. two weeks later i went on a whim with a friend of mine and we both thought it was pretty great. then again, the rolls are 90% rice in a buffet - otherwise they'd lose money - and that can bother some. it depends on whether or not you feel that for 12 bucks you should be eating like a king if you decide to go the sushi route, and your level of hunger
on a side note, Gene Weingarten's comedy pieces normally blow but his more serious work is fantastic. the featured article he wrote about the man who accidentally left his child in the car with the windows up was probably the best news piece of the last 5 years.

Actually in Reno/Carson every single sushi place is all you can eat due to the Casino mentality. Then again it costs like 26 bucks per at the nicer places so it works out.

Nigiri is my favorite by a mile. Cali rolls are good too.
This probably means I'm not a sushi snob :>

My like/dislike of sushi is in direct proportion to the amount of sake I have.

Not a snob; I'll eat and enjoy just about whatever. Sure I'll enjoy some of it more, but that's about it.

guess that makes me a sushi snob through and through. I've been to probably a couple dozen different places throughout Orange County and regularly drive up to LA to go to a place I really love up there.
Today I took my car in to get repaired around lunch and noticed there was a small sushi bar in the same center. Since I had to wait about an hour for my wife to pick me up, I stopped in there for lunch and wound up chatting with the sushi chef for about an hour. This particular bar had some great Albacore and yellowtail, but the salmon left a bit to be desired.
For any sushi snobs in southern California, i'd highly encourage you to stop by here for some excellent quality fish:
SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa: Brentwood, Los Angeles & Marina del Rey
If you insist on eating at the sushi bar, you'll need to go during normal Monday-Friday business hours to get served by Mr. Nozawa himself here:
Sushi Nozawa
I've only gone to sushi nozawa once on account of it being 60 miles away and only open on weekdays, but it was seriously the most delicious fish I've ever had.
