Q: Was my personal data encrypted?
A: All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.

And I finally got an email from Sony today. Thanks for trying to keep me up-to-date, guys.

Eh, this isn't all that alarming. Remember, they have 70 million users - you have to stagger that many e-mails you can't just spew it all out at once.

Surely their tubes can handle it. My brief Googling suggests that *all* of the emails went out today, it's not just me.

Okay, yesterday is the earliest I can find, though there could be timezone differences. Still later than it ought to be.

Not as bad as Gawker though. I got an email from someone who downloaded the data before I got one from them

Yeah, the Gawker thing was irritating as hell.

But I ended up with like 10k in gold for free on some random ass server in WoW as a result. That was fun. They loaded up some characters and I just changed the password and anded an authenticator.

Eh, its SOP for these sorts of things. Required? no. Only done to help deter law suite? absolutely.

Still pretty standard to offer when a user database is compromised.

It's not the tubes they're worried about, its the blacklisting.

Also maybe your junkmail filter picked it up?

I wont get mine. I don't have the email address I used to sign up anymore. bloops.

yeah, and rule #1 is don't use a debit card for any purchases that expose you to identity theft. ie: on the internet, over the phone, or anywhere people typically put skimmers (gas stations for example).

credit cards are easier to fight fraud. debit cards it's not because by the time you realize it the money is actually gone.

No, it just arrived today. I Googled, and I can't find any reference to it earlier than yesterday. That's a slow response.

Would love to see any proof of a company offering anything in the range of 60 million users a credit monitoring service free of charge.

Hell, even a smaller company, I've just never heard of it.

you're lack of following that sort of news does not mean that these sorts of things don't happen.

you're lack of researching it is also pretty pathetic.

here's 3 of the results from the first page of google, searching."offering credit monitoring for data breach" keep in mind putting 'credit monitoring' and 'data breach' in your search yeilds a ****ton of spam/garbage in your results, so 3 in the first page isn't bad.

Comptroller offers discount on credit monitoring after data breach | Office of Inadequate Security

Big Data Breach at Sensitive Lab Prompts Credit Scare | Credit.com News + Advice

KCI working to contain employee data breach - San Antonio Express-News

again, it's pretty standard, although not required. i follow the security news and it's mentioned in the articles all the time that the company is offering it. just because you've never heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
