This looks interesting and possibly useful. However, since GET is a web application command and not a shell command, wouldn't you have to open a socket to apnic on 80 before issuing it?

nope, 'get' is part of LWP::Simple - pretty much built-in.

try it and see. if it's no good, try a "use LWP::Simple" in there

It really isn't.

There was some collection of emails from people who left Google explaining why they did, and what they didn't like about working there. The two running complaints pretty much everyone had was that they would get paid more working damn near anywhere else for the same job, and also that their hiring process was the worst in the industry.

That's not true. We not only have enough to support us, we have enough arable land to support the whole world.

I guess you can thank the media for that.

Heavy CCTV monitoring of public areas is probably the only thing that dips its toes into the arena of 'police state', but I'm not particularly bothered by cameras covering busy streets. I'd rather one of those pick up some guy beating my head in outside a club or whatever than there to be no evidence. Cameras are also a good deterrent to gangs of chavs, so I'd rather have a camera watching me go down a road than have to walk by 10 meatheads out for trouble.

Internet control and censorship is pretty much non-existent here. There've been some fringe cases like where a few pieces of child pornography were censored by some ISPs as per an independent child protection company's recommendation, but there was a massive uproar (yes, really) and so the censorship was lifted.
America wins out against everyone on free speech. It really isn't saying much that the UK is lax when it comes to free speech standards compared to the rest of Europe.

I would LOVE to hear why its such a good thing for your country to be relaxed about immigration when everyone flooding into your country are a bunch of Muslims. Is there any up side to muslim immigration, save short term economic gain? You're immigration is a living hell.

CCTV cameras have been proven to not be effective, at least not compared to the price it would cost to put policemen on the street. They rarely solve any crimes. Again, isnt CCTV a big part of what 1984 was all about? Oh, you can escape it in your home, how generous of the government. No, wait, now courts can even have CCTV cameras installed in private homes.

As for the internet, eh

Britain's new Internet law -- as bad as everyone's been saying, and worse. Much, much worse. Boing Boing

Quote:
Peter Mandelson, the unelected Business Secretary, would have to power to make up as many new penalties and enforcement systems as he likes. And he says he's planning to appoint private militias financed by rightsholder groups who will have the power to kick you off the internet, spy on your use of the network, demand the removal of files or the blocking of websites, and Mandelson will have the power to invent any penalty, including jail time, for any transgression he deems you are guilty of. And of course, Mandelson's successor in the next government would also have this power.

Britain's libel laws are stifling free speech, says UN - Home News, UK - The Independent

is my biggest problem in terms of UK free speech. though theyve been talking of changing the laws, finally

I have friends that work for Google, and they're very happy there, but they're generally more concerned about enjoying their work and great engineering.

Come on Reggs, you think I haven't seen those? The problem is you guys in the US just see these big stories that break, just like we only see the massive stories about corruption in your government and whatnot ***8212; the media paints a very distorted picture both ways. It may seem shocking when you see articles like 'TEN BILLION CCTV CAMERAS IN BRITAIN', but in reality this means more like 'A few cameras covering every densely populated commercial area in Britain' (ie: town/city centres).

The stories you linked to have amounted to nothing more than controversy so far, with ISPs outright refusing to support the government in prying into users' business (which is technically unfeasible in the way Mandelson wants anyway) and nobody having really been affected by these things that broke months ago.

It's easy to get the impression freedom of speech and whatnot may be stifled when all you see is the huge controversial stories from your side of the pond, but in reality this is a country where freedom of speech is incredibly lax ***8212; to the point where muslims feel comfortable going on organised marches through villages full of war victims' families, and the police have to tolerate it. It's pretty sick but they're allowed to do it. Though funnily enough, a lot of people are starting to think maybe we're too lax about such things.

I'd be tempted to question your assertion that the US allows even more freedom of speech than the UK, but I wouldn't really know how to measure that. But I can't stress enough that if you have any kind of impression people in the UK are in any way afraid to voice their opinion on anything and everything ***8212; even right to the governments' faces in regular TV interviews with the public ***8212; you're mistaken.

After Google dustup, should the US ban Chinese computers?

This seemed relevant.

I do agree, China should reciprocate our openness in the market.

There is a get function in LWP::Simple, but you are actually calling the linux command get. The grave marks (`) indicate that you want to run a shell command.

my @page = `get http://cgi.apnic.net/apnic-bin/ipv4-by-country.pl?country=cn`;

vs.

my @page = get "http://cgi.apnic.net/apnic-bin/ipv4-by-country.pl?country=cn";

So dumb

Web services and hardware sales are two completely different industries. Also, China did not shut out Google. Google had to abide by the same rules and circumstances that all other foreign AND domestic companies had. Google chose to leave.
