My family owns a farm and for years 50+ years we grew two things, prunes and olives. Olives are a great crop...minus the fact that they are a nightmare to harvest. They need to be picked by hand, every single ****ing olive, and there's a pretty small window in which you need to do it. So you have to hire a big labor force, all at once, with minimal warning, for a short window of time. The really fun part is EVERYONE else that grows olives (and cherries, and apples, and asparagus), needs the same labor, at roughly the same time. Every year you'd stick your head into the orchard throughout the summer to see if it was time to harvest, and one day you'd look out and the olives would be the right size, color, and firmness and you'd put out the call, "We need pickers!" The next day you'd have 100 Mexicans signing up to work for you for two weeks. You'd fill out an I-9 form for each one of them, making sure they had the required documentation, get them a safety briefing, hand them a huge ladder, pray they didn't fall off (or pretend to fall off), and get them picking. In other words, it was a huge pain in the ass. Through a death in the family, the operation of the farm passed from one side of the family to my side in 2009, and I started helping out with the process in around 2010, I think we used e-verify in 2011, it was a giant pain in the ass, and EVERYONE we inputted was verified. By 2012, we looked at the price of labor, which had roughly doubled since 2008, and we looked at the worker's comp. numbers, and we leased what olive orchards we could, and ripped out those we couldn't (and planted almonds). I remember talking to our ranch manager about e-verify, and in my naivete, I said how good it was that we could ensure that we weren't hiring illegals. He just laughed at me and said that most of the pickers were illegal, they were just using their abuelita's social security number and forged documents. The system didn't pick up this pretty basic fraud, and since they were hired in massive bunches and only worked at a given place for a week or two, they'd just travel up and down the West Coast harvesting crops and no one would catch their deception. I'm sure it's gotten better since 2011 (just the increased speed of the internet and availability of wifi would have made it a lot easier to use now vs. then), and maybe they've fixed all the cracks that illegals slip through, but it being the federal government, my guess is their system still ****ing sucks, and they just fudge the numbers to look like they're actually doing something. This post is long enough without discussing the other obvious problem, i.e. that you need people to get the fruit off the trees, and there aren't enough legal workers to do it. But that opens up a whole can of worms that we chose to avoid by only growing crops that need minimal workers. |

from what i can see it only really catches it if multiple people try to use the same abuelita's SSN we have so many problems that day laborers and temporary farm hands are the least of our issues and concerns I mean what kind of taxes are we getting out of someone who couldn't possibly make 24k a year with at least ten dependents? not a lot......in fact negative nothing it appears http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuSGi7LAPp8 so I'm fine with them going off the grid and not even trying to put them back on it. i wouldn't even care about illegal immigration if it weren't for the pandering and benefits bull**** ($$$$) we feel so obliged to dump all over them. |

you guys see the new Putin video? Depending on where you watch it, putin says many different things about trump. CNN has him saying that trump is bright while Yahoo says flamboyant. I didn't bother with anywhere else, because i don't really care that much.

Thanks for the positive feedback on the effort post. I just got back from a dinner that included some people still involved in worker-heavy crops, and without rehashing the entire conversation we had about e-verify, the subtext I got from it is that they just don't want to know if their workers are legal or not.
Apparently e-verify works well, but it's not mandatory, so on the surface they say, "**** the Federal Government, they're not going to do **** they don't have to." As long as the workers have good enough forged documents that the employers can say that they made a reasonable effort to check, they're ok with that. They just want their fruit off the trees, and the conversation pretty much starts and ends there. |

The problem arises when you have a **** crop and there isn't much fruit to pick. You have to get the fruit off the trees or else it will rot, and lead to all kinds of problems, but if the workers can't make more than minimum wage, and you have to pay them hourly, they'll tell you to **** yourself and go pick an orchard with more fruit where they can make more money quicker. This is probably boring for most people, but I found it fascinating, lots of angles I hadn't considered. It definitely makes me glad we don't have to deal with this **** anymore. |

I am one of these, without Canadian oil output our country can't compete in any area of export. Before bad mouthing a Trump crusade please explain how the Left hopes to restore the millions of jobs lost in the final 4 months of the Obama presidency, and how they can expect anyone who believes in working for their money, to vote anything but Trump |

i think everyone (other than Trump ;) ) already knew that anyway, but still interesting to hear about! |

He kind of creeps me out. He talks about "normal looking people" at the rally and repeats that over and over. Yet he himself does not look normal. He's well into his 40s and doesn't work out. He colors his hair, which is pathetic, and look at how hard he's trying to dress cool, and have a young hairstyle and glasses. He get unusually angry at the rally and extremely condescending. I think he's an extrovert who probably is social a lot, but can never get girls to have sex with him. He tries to look "cool" which is pathetic at his age. Also his very strange temper I promise you is the result of sexual frustration. I guarantee you he lives alone, constantly fails at picking up women, and watching more porn than is healthy. EDIT: Wow, read the comments on this video. It's nothing but liberals just posting over and over that Trump is racist but they never have any substance. These are the type of people who if you interviewed, it would be so cringeworthy. |
if you've worked for enough companies facing complex problems, the solution is often very simple, it involves firing the person in charge
