Best free antivirus?

.

Hellsfury 02-13-2018 15:47

No such thing.

However, the basic Microsoft Security Essentials (aka Windows Defender in Win10) is decent enough.

Have used malwarebytes and Microsoft security essentials together without issues for a long time

Hellsfury 02-13-2018 15:51

Malwarebytes isn't technically free.

The basic file scanner is free to use, but it won't stop anything from infecting your system. The scanner just looks for things after the fact. However, it would be better to keep things from getting into your system in the first place and that's what you pay for.

It is a good product though.

Odio 02-13-2018 15:51

I used to use Malwarebytes or Avast. Now I just use common sense.

Leaked NSA Exploits Modified To Attack Every Windows Version Since 2000

If you're not on the latest updated version of Windows 10, you might want to disable SMB.

Still not on Windows 10? Fine, sighs Microsoft, here are its antivirus tools for Windows 7, 8.1 • The Register
Microsoft has back-ported its Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) antivirus tool from Windows 10 to Windows 7 and 8.1.

The release will allow those holding out with older versions of the OS to get some of the same exploit and malware-infection prevention and event reporting features it offers on Windows 10, particularly when used with Windows Defender.

For enterprises, the extension to Windows 7 and 8.1 will, more importantly, allow admins to bring their older machines under the same security management and administration tools they use for Windows 10 PCs.

Buy Kaspersky. That way if the CIA NSA FBI Clinton cabal is spying on you the KGB will let you know.

Rustie 02-13-2018 17:48

I use avast, but like Odio said common sense uses less resources.

It's basically the same engine as their corporate version but free. If you do anything hard hitting on the local drive, you can add exceptions to files and directories and it will ignore them. For instance, I don't want it real-time scanning my music files while I am using my DAW. Anyway, for the most part, you won't even notice it is active. Even during the scheduled full scans.

Also, keep your penis out of anything with a rash, scab or oozing puss.
