*URGENT* RIP IATEYOURBABY

will post moar info later, but on March 2nd my web host deleted the entire /twdemos directory 1 hour after i'd pre-paid for another full year

after 3 days of negotiation, i convinced them to restore it for 1 week so that I can download it and move it somewhere else

long story short:

if you have files hosted at IAteYourBaby.com /twdemos
if you want files off it
whatever

get them before March 11th - the whole /twdemos folder will be permanently deleted by my host on that date :(

apparently after 15 years I can't host my files there anymore

will be looking for a replacement host, or google drive or something to at least provide some access to all the T1 stuff

RIP

That's fucking horrifying. Throw everything on to a G Drive asap at least to place them somewhere. Very cheap. PM me if you need help, would chip in a bit for sure.

There's a ton of history and memories there potentially lost forever.

sorry man I filed a copyright infringement notice with them like 8 years ago when u refused to host my files that I soon thereafter lost

revenge is a dish best served cold or whatever

it had nothing to do with copyright, apparently using ~60 gigs on an 'unlimited' service is too much

hosting your files would have pushed me over that secret limit 8 years ago

which i believe was my concern at the time

but i dont recall the details

60 gigs ish for /twdemos folder that will be deleted + i had maybe 20 in the core iateyouraby folder that wont be deleted maybe

the original archive is about 10 gigs of demos + sharps demos are 2 opsayo's 1

+ 9 gigs of tribes videos + 4 gigs of shoutcasts

my folder is 12
milks is 10
others around 1-2 each

could probably fit just the demos w/o any other shit on a 15gb free google drive or something

[bugs@localhost ~]$ du -s iateyourbaby.com
52369812 iateyourbaby.com

53GB here, but i am sure that can be knocked down a lot with dedup.

Amazon also offers fairly cheap servers and a lot of space. We have a bucket with over 700GB of website backups and it's less than $30 a month. Not sure how easy it would be to share the demos and other files or make them accessible like a 'normal' website is though.

I used to use ixwebhosting for all of my hosting needs. Was like $4/month, unlimited/unmetered everything, php/my_sql support and all that jazz.

Today, it looks like ixwebhosting.com redirects to Web Hosting Plans and Packages - Web Hosting Rates - Bluehost... Dunno if they bought the whole company out or just bought the domain, but they have similar web hosting plans.

I gave ftp access to subdomains for each of my clan mates. My only instruction to them was to avoid uploading illegal content such as child porn or anything pirated. All but one used it appropriately... One ruined it for everyone but uploading several hundred gigs of pirated stuff including Windows XP, adobe suite, discographies, DVD quality movies, etc... Got a warning from the host, deleted his subdomain and revoked his ftp access, problem solved. I wish I still hosted that website, but I lost interest and failed to pay the bill.

ya lots of options it's not the end of the world, thankfully they restored the folder that was deleted i was just in a bit of a panic. i'm sure i'll find somewhere to host them again

thanks for the ideas guys

if there's a way to browse google or amazon drive i'd totally go with something like that, but idk how that shit works im just a caveman

i just got amazon prime

so l8 2 party

i know

Dreamhost is kinda being a dick about this, apparently now it's not about the files or the size it's that I dont have a static HTML 'webpage' that links to each of the demos. Apparently a styled headered automatically generated php file listing isn't a 'website' and my files must be 'related to a website'

seems arbitrary and dumb and im so fed up with them at this point that i honestly don't really care if they delete my shit, it just pisses me off that they did it 1 hour after i pre-paid for a year so now i'm stuck with them for a year and have to find somewhere else to host what we've already paid to host.

in the meantime, I installed/setup my own hosted Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP webserver as a temporary backup at lamp.iateyourbaby.com . the rest of the demos will be uploaded sometime tonight - not sure if/when i'll upload the videos/shoutcasts/my folders etc. the URL/folder structure/etc will probably change at some point too once i get all this shit figured out.

at least with my own hosted box no one can arbitrarily delete my shit because 'a webpage isn't a webpage' *sigh* fukn dreamhost diaf

Hi again

Thanks for the reply back!

I've replied inline below to each concern for you:

"I'm sure it would be possible to put up some kind of webpage that points
to those files, although i'm still not clear on how that makes it better."

So, just making a landing page of shared files for download doesn't
really constitute as a "website" per se. It'd be more like a glorified
storage location. Making an actual website intended for the purpose of
advertising the game, and having pages of where you can view image
galleries, or videos and such would make it more in line with being a
"website".

Just like any other site, you'd have a home page advertising the game and
what it's about and stuff, and subpages that'll take users to say, a
gallery of images for that game, and another page for a forum where users
can post about it and stuff. Basically, it'd be more than just a place to
download stuff.

"The problem for me is that there are over 2500 of these 'demos' that i
host for my community. I like to keep these available because players
returning after a few years often find 'demos' of their team in the archive and can
watch and re-live those moments. There isn't a common set of 'best' ones
or 'important' ones because what one person finds interesting, others
don't."

So, this sounds more like archived demos. Are these videos of some sort?
Perhaps, creating a page where the demos are viewable through the site
would be okay. But, archived data storage poses somewhat of an issue as
well in the cases where you just have stuff there that isn't actually
accessed very often, if at all. For more archived stuff, would it be an
option to manage the archive storage locally, and possible consider
services like Youtube to upload them to to link them through the site for
view in those cases where users might view it?

Having them actually viewable through the site instead of just sharing as
a storage repo would help, though.

"I do want to stay with Dreamhost, especially since i literally pre-paid
for a year of hosting an hour or two before my files were deleted - but if I
have to spend a large amount of time on 'fixing' the site, it's a lot
easier for me to just get a $5/month DigitaOcean droplet and host my own
Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP server there without any arbitrary limits on how i
present the files to my users. However, it would leave a very bad taste
in my mouth to have lost $120 USD ($160+ Canadian) paying for a hosting
service that I don't have any use for, and have to leave after 15 years
of being a happy, satisfied customer."

And, we want you to stay with us!

I know it's some work to do, but basically, the problem with how it is
now is that it's only a storage repo on a server that's not only sharing
space with the neighboring accounts hosting on it as well, but meant to
manage "websites" for hosting instead of storage repos. If you can turn
the repo into a website serving the data instead, we can look over that
and allow the usage instead.

the /twdemos/ user was deleted yesterday

im in the process of making a site and re-uploading most of the files. if it's not good enough for dreamhost, they can go fuck themselves and i'll find another host that isnt retarded
