[(#)SOCCER] 2007-2008 Season Thread Part II

Dear Fulham,

You got lucky again. Please sign real defenders. Bocanegra, if you stay, please play for Fulham like you play for the USA. Eddie Johnson, please spend the offseason working on your touch and growing new testicles. Mr. Manager, please play Dempsey 'in-the-hole' (and Mr. Dempsey, please finish for Fulham like you do for the USA).

Brian McBride, you are the greatest American player. Ever.

Please, Fulham,...please...crack the Top 10 next year.

i mean can you imagine in baseball or the NBA, at the end of the season or if a playoff series is tied they just say- well whoever scored more runs/made more baskets wins. every fan would write that off is ludicrous.

certain teams play more offensive styles than other teams. certain teams have 1-man bands. sigh

For a home and home, using aggregate and away goals works

In a league, you probably should look at a playoff or something (I thought I read that the Italians actually have a playoff if the top two teams are tied on points but I don't believe it)

Serie A

Before the 2005–06 season if two or more teams were tied in points for first place, for only one spot in a European tournament, or in the relegation zone, teams would play tie-breaking games after the season was over to determine which team would be champion, or be awarded a European tournament spot, or be saved or relegated. Since 2005-06, if two or more teams end the season with the same number of points, the ordering is determined by their head-to-head records. In case two or more teams have same total points and same head-to-head records, goal difference becomes the secondary deciding factor.

The 2006/2007 season of the Eredivisie began on August 18, 2006. The season saw PSV Eindhoven quickly building a gap with the other teams. After 20 matches, the club was 11 points ahead of AZ and 12 points ahead of Ajax. The lead quickly dissipated in the 13 matches that followed. A draw of PSV at FC Utrecht in the penultimate round saw AZ and Ajax catching up. The three clubs were all on 72 points from 33 matches, with the AZ on top due to goal difference. Ajax were second, PSV were third. AZ suffered a shock defeat at league minnows Excelsior Rotterdam in the final round, playing with 10 men after 15 minutes in the game. Ajax won 0-2 at Willem II, and PSV beat Vitesse 5-1. PSV and Ajax both finished on 75 points, but PSV finished first due to a better goal difference (+50, against +49 for Ajax) to end one of the most exciting and closest title races in many years.

england will be the most competitive given that they won't have much of a chance to play together during the summer before wc qualifying

Tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra has put Manchester City’s entire squad up for sale in the latest twist to his bizarre behaviour.

Thai billionaire Shinawatra, who is already set to sack manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, is apparently so disgusted with the team’s performances in the second half of the season that he wants a massive clear-out, including young stars such as Micah Richards, Michael Johnson and Joe Hart.

The news of the impending fire sale throws City even deeper into turmoil and will further antagonise fans, who staged a mass demonstration against Shinawatra last week.

They are threatening to withhold money for season tickets until it becomes clear who the manager will be next season and what players will be on the pitch. It also underlines the belief of many City insiders that Shinawatra does not understand football.

City’s owner, it is understood, has written a letter to each member of the team conveying his feelings.

He has put all contract talks on hold and wants to start next season from scratch with a new

manager and new players. All this has prompted deputy chairman John Wardle, who is distraught at the crisis, to apologise to the players for selling the club to Shinawatra.

But the damage has been done and many players will be delighted to jump ship and relaunch their careers at a club with a less volatile owner.

Skipper Richard Dunne is expected to join Newcastle for £5million. The poor treatment of Eriksson was the final straw for Dunne, City’s Player of the Season. Richards is also unhappy.

He signed a new four-year contract in February because he was sure the club were going in the right direction. But Manchester United and Chelsea have now been alerted.

Johnson is a target for Liverpool, and goalkeeper Hart is being pursued by Tottenham, who also covet Martin Petrov, City’s Bulgarian winger.

Sunderland have been eyeing Stephen Ireland and there would be no shortage of bids for Elano.

Morale was so low that City lost Sunday’s final league game 8-1 against Middlesbrough.

If the above is true, jesus weeps at shinawatra basically demolishing what was a strong squad that was probably going to challenge whomever was stuck in 4th next season.

I won't complain too much if we pick up a few players from them though, especially Richards :D
