How do you explain this to a child? good question. I explained it to my son this morning. I told him that some very bad people had crashed airliners into buildings in New York and Washington and that many people had died. I told him that he was safe, mom and dad were here with him, and we would protect him. (even if you can't do the last part, it makes them feel better hearing it). I told him we would find the people who had done this and they would be punished. I told him this was a sad, sad, day for our country, but we would be ok.

Again, as much as I would like to see a peaceful resolution to this...
I have to agree.

It would be worst to say to your childrem that there will be war cause our govern cant stop this violence and wanna kill more people and that it will bomb theyr childreem and that they will die and that they will probably kill more people to retaliate......

Vlas, you are truly awesome. That is the best summation of this I can think of. Glad to hear your friends are okay. I have a friend who works in the twin towers and I have not heard from him... =(

I've heard that there are upwards of 50,000 people in the two towers (combined) during the day. The elevators were shut down after the first plane hit so evac was going slowly. No idea on how many casualties. No confirmation on the numbers though.

You know it's really bad when they're frightful from even releasing a 'vague' number.

I am a pessimist but I think you and everyone on this forum is going to shit their pants when the total dead from this are announced. Have you ever been to New York? Do you realize how large those buildings are? Do you know how many people work down there? If you are not from around here or haven't gotten accustomed to seeing the New York skyline then you aren't going to grasp the enormity of this -- those two buildings are GONE.

And I'm sure almost every one of the people in that building were civilians. They did nothing against these terrorists. I am not calling for the deaths of Arab civilians. I am commenting on how I am sickened by anyone celebrating this and telling you, not suggesting to you, that the Palestinians have never seen a catastrophe like this. Never. Yes they are oppressed, yes many have died. But no one has ever pulled this kind of shit that happened today on them. I don't think they understand what it would be like to lose, say 10,000 of their own in one, fell swoop.

I think 10,000 will be very conservative considering it was just at the start of the business day when the MOST people would be there and more people outside the towers if they came down immediately.

And the Palestinians have never experienced anyting like this. Think of wiping out every Palestinian Village of every man, woman and child within a few miles of the border with Israel. Then they might know what it is like.

Of hand, I would say a 757 could hold something near 40,000 lbs of Jet A. Not sure about the 767, but they are larger and older aircraft, with less fuel-efficient engines, so I'm sure it was more. I don't know who else here has ever seen an engine fire on a plane, but it's terrifying. Once the fuel is in a mist or vapor, it burns incredibly hot. I don't think the WTC caught the full brunt of the fuel, though. Jet A just won't burn unless it's atomized, you can put out matches in a bucket of it. If all 3 fuel tanks had gone on either of those planes, you would've seen that building in half really quick.

man this stuff is crazy as fuck. i was starting 3rd period in high school when news of the first one came on. i was like wtf holy shit. then 20 minutes later they say another hit. 20 after that one hits the pentagon. then one building falls down, then the other.

my heart goes out tot he rescuers who attempted to save people in both building and were killed in duty as the buildings came down upon them. its heartbreaking.

in school a few of my friends were calling their families cuz their dad/relatives were on flights near there.

then later, one of the supposedly hijacked flights landed in Cleveland where I live. and supposedly another was still airborn heading away from cleveland. this is fucking crazy. i hope they find who was responsible and deal death accordingly.

I may be wrong here, but perhaps this on a scale with the Crusades.

anyone fear that this will cause a chain reaction of angry terrorists?

like people like mcveigh who see this on tv and go and blow something up and know it will be credited to who ever blew up the WTC?

I fear this greatly. Some americans are stupid - such as going to movies since their work was canceled today and such but who's to say an angry civilian won't go and blow up a movie theatre - or anything for that matter.

How long will it take you to see that hate is what caused this all?

My friend,

I think you misread my response. First of all, I'm speaking AGAINST the large scale response that PJ has condoned. I believe that the people and/or factions responsible should be brought to swift justice. I DO NOT believe that the US should start arbitrarily bombing the countries known to harbour terrorists.

Second, I'm Canadian. We're only good for bringing the beer to the conflict.

So... STFU Eh?!

bone_crusher, you really need to get a clue. People are calling for war because they are damn well pissed off. Emotions are running extremely high, and for many of us, the adrenaline surge makes us want kill something. If I had the perpetretators of this heinous act in the room with me now and had a flamethrower....

As I mentioned in this thread or another, the age of innocence is over. People out there want to kill us, not because we are soldiers, not because we have hurt them, but merely because we are a "symbol" of oppression. We cannot allow this kind of crap to continue. Every terrorist organization in the world needs to be exterminated, leaf, branch, and root. No courts, no lengthy trials, no careful accumulation of evidence over months and years. Just quick, effective and final obliteration. Seize or destroy their finances, annihilate their infrastructure, and kill them and their immediate support staff. The countries that support the terrorists will never love us or respect us. Let them fear us instead.
