|R|u|s|t|y| 11-30-2011, 02:04 PM Can't seem to break past 135*8.
Any particular method you guys structure your training plan for over head presses?
Any assisting exercises that you find help?
My training has been erratic lately and my eating poor.
Regardless; halp!
BeLiaL 11-30-2011, 02:08 PM you looking for more weight or more reps?
also, you already know this, train regularly and eat enough to recover or else nothing in your training is going to matter
slogg 11-30-2011, 04:19 PM Wear a backpack while doing them

I know. Exams have made my training erratic.
How quick was your progress on the over head press?
BeLiaL 11-30-2011, 09:17 PM relatively quick
within one year of lifting i was up to almost 190 for 3x5, which is a little higher than most people are going to get on a linear progression
but i also weigh around 200lbs, and i didn't mind gaining the weight to get there
most efficient way to build strength is SS (or something very similar to SS) followed by an intermediate program like Texas Method (weekly gains using volume/light/intensity days)
most people won't ever progress past intermediate
opsayo 12-01-2011, 12:31 AM i can press 100 lbs :)

Within 4 months I went from 135*5 to 185*1 strict press.
A year sounds doable.
k thx.
Redz15 12-07-2011, 11:01 PM less reps more weight
5x5 adding 5 pounds if you can complete 5x5
BeLiaL 12-07-2011, 11:55 PM so which is it, less reps or more reps?
5x5 is stupid for someone who doesn't need weekly periodization
I pressed 300lbs no problem.
on my keyboard

Huh?
BeLiaL 12-08-2011, 09:05 AM if you haven't exhausted a linear progression (meaning you can still make increases in weight every workout), 5x5 is not efficient -- it's a lot of volume (reps)
2good@tribes.com 12-08-2011, 12:12 PM lmfao u believe the stuff u read in mens health eh belial? I think u need to study to try and understand how the human body works
opsayo 12-08-2011, 03:05 PM belial know his stuff pretty well 2good
2good@tribes.com 12-08-2011, 03:18 PM that is cool that u think so
being a gym rat does not = you understand how human body works.
being gym rat = you lift weights
studies show going 2 school increases knowledge, i would suggest this approach 4 belial
opsayo 12-08-2011, 03:23 PM he may have been a gym rat but he did lots of research and is pretty well knowledged
i think he is saying that 2 much volume when u r in a beginner or intermediate stage can be counter productive
My Military Press (strict overhead press, or OHP, whatever) went up doing 5/3/1 with OHP being the first day of the week when I was the most recovered. I also did the BBB Press template 50% for 5 sets of 10, right after my 5/3/1 sets/reps.
I use a false grip
I use wrist wraps
I use a 4" PL belt
I keep my feet together and tighten my whole body.
Keep your elbows in and your grip slightly closer than you think you should.
Those are my only tips/advice -- Do 5/3/1 sets and reps for OHP and then do Boring But Big/BBB sets and reps right afterward.
With that my Mil Press went from 185x5 to 225x3-4 and a 250x1 at one point. My OHP is slightly retarded by most ppl's standards.. its just something I'm good at. Same with Deadlifts.. maybe I should've been an oly lifter
Good luck.
opsayo 12-08-2011, 03:35 PM OHP are real fun to do (imo)
|R|u|s|t|y| 12-09-2011, 12:30 PM How attainable is 225*5? That's my goal for the OHP.
strict?
lift OHP at the beginning of your week for 2-5 years.
225x5 strict OHP is super hard. youll have shoulders and triceps like cannon balls before doing that
