28th out of 200+ runners for breast cancer.

my time was 24.09 and I ran the entire time. The guy that won got 17.xx don't remember exactly what time and then when he finished he ran it again.

Pretty fun I am looking forward to the next one on Thanksgiving day.

Anybody else have 5k times?

I ran a 5K at my school earlier this month, I got 25:59 but would have done better if their wasn't so much snow and ice on the ground..it snowed the day before a few inches.

i ran one in in may in almost the same time

i'd definitely run one faster now since ive been training more but 24 minutes was great

5Ks are a lot of fun

5ks really are fun, just a quick high-output race. I'm ok with my 20:40 this year, hoping to break into the 19s next year.

ps you should run a race at sea level some time and go for a PR

i looked into the rock and roll half marathon in phoenix as a PR course but they want 100 bucks for the race...what the hell is that about?

I ran one back in July coming in at 23:41. Better than I thought I would do seeing as how I hadn't really been very seriously training for it at all. It was fun, I like the shirt I got because it's great to wear to the gym now.

R&R is a bunch of money grubbers with a history of serious impropriety. Also I don't think I'll be doing another marathon any time soon, I'll stick to halves or shorter.

I don't know if sea level would help, as I'm used to running in cool, dry weather. Crank up the heat and humidity and I start dying.

go for a winter half in a place like austin. temps are usually around 50, hardly any humidity, and the weather seems pretty stable.

are you still hurting from your marathon?

Texas can suck it. Besides I've got bigger concerns like finishing PT on my shoulder and getting back in to weight lifting and skiing. I don't know if I'll even be able to spend the time and energy to train enough to beat my 1:38 in the half by May.

No more hurting except for the arch of my right foot where a HUDGE (2"x4" approx) blister formed and popped and wouldn't heal, and that's almost pain free (really it's more just tight skin at this point).

I ran for breast cancer a few weeks back, and came in at 22:10. I was kinda disappointed but the race was huge and I spent the 1st mile dodging fatties.

prostate cancer is much more of a killer than breast cancer but it doesnt get anywhere near the level of exposure

yay media

Training runs are generally around 19:30, all-out race PR is 17:44. I'd like to break 17:00 at some point, but I rarely train for that distance (generally race 10k or longer). I believe that my best 10k time is 37:10. I think I can get this down to 35:00 if I focused on it.

I like the idea of a Race for the Cure type thing for Prostate Cancer...it's sad that it is so easily overlooked!

I also ran my first 5k a couple days ago. Around 29 minutes. I hate you all.

For those of you new to running and wanting to do a lot of 5k's and do them well (or at least improve your time)...the key is interval training.

Training days like:
1 mile warmup
6 x 400 meters (60 second rest)
8 x 100 meters (30 second rest)

1 mile warmup
8 x 200 meters (45 second rest)
8 x 100 meters (30 second rest)

1 mile warmup
4 x 800 meters (90 second rest)
8 x 100 meters (30 second rest)

My favorite:
1 mile warmup
Repeat 2-3 times: 200 on, 200 off, 400 on, 200 off, 800 on, 200 off
8 x 100 meters (30 second rest)

Also, find a hill (200-500 meters) and do hill sprints. You'll be amazed at how much stronger your 5k times get doing these 1 or 2 times per week (especially hills).

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of doing interval training but so far I've just been running 3 miles at a time at a leisurely pace.

Up that 3 to a 4 mile run...that extra mile won't seem like too much in training but will really make a difference when it comes to race time.

I've been doing a lazy man's high intensity workout lately. I'll get on a treadmill and jog for about 6 minutes to warm up with it set to 6.5 and then up it to 11.5 or so for 30 seconds and back down to 6.5 for 90, and repeat that 6-8 times. I do get quite tired doing it and it's probably dangerous and bad but damnit I like to watch TV while I run. :O

I really should start using the track at the gym or (better yet) doing it outdoors, though.

Careful of using an indoor track for speed work...you are turning too much on the small track and this puts addition strain/stress on your entire body and your form is compromised. This often leads to injuries.

Treadmill is fine for some interval work...especially if you add in some incline (3-6%).
