I just picked up a pair of squat shoes and goddamn, what a difference they make. I felt a noticeable difference when doing my squats/deadlifts this morning...it felt like my feet were glued to the floor.

How much and from where?

I usually wear a shitty shoe with no air chambers - but I still feel the bounce and rebound from the soles.

Waste of money.

Take your shoes off... not a waste of money.

Squatting barefoot is actually done by professionals as well.

Problem with that is - some gyms don't allow it for safety reasons, hygiene reasons, and also gym floors are pretty fucking gross sometimes as well.

My gym doesn't allow me to take my shoes off... so I only do it when it's 1 Rep Max day on deads or squats. :)

what do you do on non max days?

Just out of curiosity... why is it that you need something to stick you to the floor anyway?

If you're squatting correctly, your heels should be stuck to the floor without any problem. However, if you're raising onto your toes or leaning forward, it's a muscle imbalance issue and you're just addressing a symptom.

Squatting, deadlifting... they are both heel drive dependent and if you can't keep your heels down, you need to take a step back and learn how to actually do the lift.

In terms of exercises or shoes?

I have a bench day, deadlift day, overhead press day, and squat day and some accessory in there if I feel like it. Basically, every workout starts with one of those lifts and I cycle 5 rep maxs, 3 rep maxs, and 1 rep max each week.

I have shitty cross-trainers that I squat and deadlift in no problem. I take my shoes off if I'm going for a 1 rep max... but it's only psychological.

Honestly, Converse Chuck Taylors are excellent shoes and will cost you a lot less than squat shoes and they function the exact same.

Why are you attempting to turn this thread into a dickwaving contest?

I understand the mechanics of a proper lift.

If your contention is that there is no difference between performing heel-driven lifts in shoes with squishy heels, and lifts performed in non-squishy heels, then you are an idiot and don't know what you're talking about.

You not being able to afford shoes and lifting barefoot is neither interesting nor relevant.

Do you kiss the weights goodbye? Pretty sensitive.

No worries, don't take help or advice. Keep doing what you're doing.

Part of giving advice is taking it.

I previously squatted in cross trainers as well, and noticed a huge difference after switching to squat shoes.

Apparently, your mileage may vary.

Are there springs in the shoes to help you lift more weight?

No. Flat hard stable soles so you have a solid platform to push the weight off of.

Additionally there are extra straps to hold them on your feet better, but primarily the benefit is derived from the solid heel. It actually feels weird walking around in them since the soles don't flex much at all.
