So what's the best cutting diet? [bodyfat loss]

I used to work at a place where one of our bosses was a professional bodybuilder. Now first of all.. getting any sort of advice from these guys has to be taken with a grain of salt because they're clearly operating on a different plane than everyone else. I want to look lean and good and what not pretty much entirely for self confidence and to look good naked. Pure and simple. These guys want to be the biggest most jacked brawlies they can possibly be. So two different things. That being said.. my boss and bodybuilders know what they're talking about.

So I put on a little bodyfat over the summer because of a bad phase I was going through and I successfully lost it all over about a 6-8 week period just by working out/running and eating a diet that consisted of mostly protein but a good amount of healthy carbs and fats. So I went in and saw my bodybuilder boss one day and he said everything looked good but I still needed to drop some bodyfat (which I'm not disagreeing with) and then he said they only way I could do this is to completely cut out the carbs. He wants me to go full on ketosis and thinks that's pretty much the only way.

I usually know all about this but I've never been at this point (low bodyfat but not ripped low bodyfat) and wanted to go this far. The only carbs I eat are brown rice, Ezekiel bread, oatmeal, some veges and occccccasionally some frozen strawberries/blueberries in a protein shake.

Who here has successfully dropped a lot of bodyfat (not just weight!) and done it by eating carbs or at least some carbs?

Do I have to go full protein to lose this last amount of bodyfat?

Long post I know but it's late.

You don't need to keto to cut serious fat. Keep the calorie intake low and mix in a lot of running and you can cut bf% pretty quickly unless you're under 10% already. Take your BMR and drop it by 15%. Keep it up for 1-2 months or however long it takes at 2lb/mo. Incorporate weight training to preserve more muscle mass and make sure you are eating SUFFICIENT protein (>50g/day) Yeah, I know people will tell you more. Honestly - pregnant women only need 45g max - you don't need more when you are cutting.

It's important to run / jog though. I've never had luck with any other cardio

Different for everybody I suppose - I cut bodyfat by going from 5x5 workout plan to 3x10 and adding in cardio 2 days a week.

Was still eating about 80-100g protein a day (I only weight 165, at 5'10) and cut down to 8% Bodyfat. Unfortunately I am just lucky to have good genes. This may work for you as it would probably be a change of pace (most guys I've seen don't do less weight/more reps) and not to mention some cardo. I chose cycling one day and swimming the other. I didn't go on a ketosis diet, I love my carbs, as do most people. Carbs are delicious, and essential before and after your workout.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you want to cut, just throw something different at your body, and take in less calories.

edit: also its 6 in the morning and im drunk so take all of this advice with a grain of salt.

Have to? Not at all. In fact I, personally, never would. It might even work though.

I am currently just eatin dick all for food with a lot of broccoli and have dropped 10 lbs so far. Want to get to 190, so a few more to go. Just eat less and run more.

Haha I don't think just eating broccoli is the best diet for me. I think when I posted this thread I was just so bowled over by his assertion that keto was the only way to go because of the claims he made.. which did makes some sense. I mean keto clearly does burn body fat better than anything else but it's just something I'd like to avoid. I suppose I should just severely restrict carbs to oatmeal and some brown rice in the beginning of the day.

keto diet is a good way to lose all the muscle you've built up

when it comes to catabolic diets, keto diets are actually not that bad.
that doesn't mean that I could do one, I think there are comparable ways that don't require such drastic change.

The whole point of a keto diet is to prevent muscle loss.

I don't know why you would swear off eating food high in water content but consider a keto diet.

that makes me laugh

people need to research things before they make accusations such as keto loses all muscle

keto diets are a good for bad breath, not much else imo

Healthiest way is pretty much what Rayn described. I'd switch up the cardio though to stop yourself from getting bored.

what do you guys do to maintain when you're done cutting?

I mean, you don't want to have to eat like that forever right?

the only difference between a 'cutting' diet for me and my normal diet is that i eat less while cutting. to maintain i just try and keep my calories reasonable.

What's a good goal to get your body fat percentage down to? And how long should it take for me to get down to that percentage? I'm at 20.8 % now, just got measured yesterday when I participated in a health study thing.

I'd shoot for ~0.5%/week for the first couple weeks. You can go up to 1% I'd say, but that requires a lot of discipline... A pound or two a week is a generally good goal (two being absolute MAX). Just set a reasonable goal like 16%, see how you feel and if you want to stick with it or stay where you are.

I don't worry much about maintenance. I just eat when I'm hungry, stop when I'm not, eat healthy foods. I run 6 days a week, plus gym time though so I usually worry more about eating not enough than too much.
