Working out in the morning

I'm thinking of switching my workouts from 10:30pm/11pm at night to maybe 5am before work.

Reason being is my gym is kinda full earlier than 10 usually, and when I come home from work - I have to sit on my ass and wait for rush hour to end and then dinner and then more time until 10:30 comes around and I can then go to the gym. By then I'm tired and want to just sleep.

I'm worried I'll sleep through working out if I do it at 5am - but I'm gonna give it a go and see what happens. Maybe adjust it to 4:30am if I have to.

What do you guys do for breakfast? Do you eat before going to the gym if you workout in the morning?

I'm basically going to wakeup - crawl out of bed - throw on gym clothes - drive to the gym.

I don't want to eat right before a workout - but I also don't want to exercise on a completely empty stomach. Thoughts?

eat a granola bar or something light like a banana before you go to the gym. then have your breakfast packed so you can eat it at work.

When I run in the morning I have a piece of toast with peanut butter or maybe a banana or an egg or two (or a combination, depending how starved I am) before hand then have my oatmeal and stuff after. If you're going to be working out in the morning just make sure you get the nutrients to reload for the morning during your dinner (eg. for running this means a little higher carb meals).

If you can stomach it a snack would probably make it easier.

i find if i don't have breakfast before going to the gym in the morning the session sucks - running on empty blows. if i really have no time for breakfast though, i avoid a leg workout at the very least.

Your test levels are the highest in the mornings (hence raging boners) so you potentially could have better workouts if you get used to the new schedule? I always have to eat before working out, typically its a bowl of oats with milk, splenda, cinnamon, and a protein shake.

Here is a con to lifting weights first this in the morning:

"Avoid training first thing in the morning. Because we’ve decompressed overnight, our spines are “superhydrated” when we first wake up in the morning; this places more stress on the ligaments and discs and less on the supporting musculature. As a little frame of reference, full flexion reduces buttressing strength against shear by 23-43% depending on the time of day – meaning that your spine might be 20% safer later in the day even if exercise selection is held constant. Give the spine a bit of time to “dehydrate” and you’ll be much better off."

What I do before morning workouts or races (<10k race):

Wake up, put a piece of bread in the toaster, grab your stuff, get toasted bread from toaster, cover in almond butter, drink 12 oz water, walk out door.

Work out

After, have a banana with your normal breakfast.

I totally missed working out at 5am this morning and slept in until 7:20. My fucking girlfriend didn't help me get out of bed either.

I don't want to get out of bed when she's over.

While this is true, there's a easy solution and it's proper warming up and stretching. And I don't mean 5 minutes on the treadmill and quick stretches though, but good morning yoga session or some such. (But yea I do realise time is the issue here, so the op needs to make his own decisions here.)
i would not workout in the morning if I didn't have time for proper warm-up .

lol

working out in the morning isn't easy man, no one likes to wake up to go and exercise. i'd rather sleep in and work out at night. unless you sleep at like 10 pm and are up at 6 am, but who really has that type of schedule except old people

Yeah - maybe I'll start going right after work. My main objective is to get to the gym before it gets crowded - and get there before I get "sleepy" and start making excuses not to go.

I usually get an urge and pump to workout in the aftenoon. Usually around 2-4pm.

I feel like if I had the chance to workout at that time -my workouts would be amazing - and I'd also be a lot more likely to go.
