Getting Past the Plateau

Yeah, been a long time since I was out on TW.

The skinny:

Fall 2007 - I get diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I weighed 389 pounds at the time spread out over my six foot six inch height. Being not thrilled about losing my eyesight, my feet or being hooked up to dialysis three times a week to have my oil changed I decide the lose the weight.

Over the course of 2008 I lose down to just about 300 pounds, about 302 or so - so i definately look different than I did back then (having a chin again is one nice perk)

The problem is that I have seem to hit a plateau - though I watch my diet and walk a mile a day and do weights two times a week I cant seem to get past that speedbump and get down to about 250 or so (which I think is near optimal considering I am a big guy in height and bone structure)

any suggestions?

Oh, blood sugar-wise? My blood sugar has gone down from an average of 280 or so (cellular damage) to about 110 or so (within normal parameters)

You damn Americans and you're strange readings.

Real diabetics measure in mmol/L. None of that mg/dl. I mean, mg/dl is already metric, what's the issue?

As for your only question? I'd suggest you take it up a notch. Eat less/move more, as always.

The solution is pretty simple
workout more.
and fix the diet.

+ stick with it.

Well, you're certainly not at the 'last 10 lbs' hurdle or anything, so my guess is you've been hitting the low calorie thing pretty hard, and probably doing a lot of low impact steady cardio.

Personal opinion, but I think steady cardio is AWFUL. I have known a lot of huge guys that do 10+ miles per day on treadmills and the like. I think your body just adjusts extremely fast and they do little to nothing for you.

Have you hit the basics of plateau busting? changed up your carb\fat\protein ratio, carb loaded\fasted, changed the time of day of your workout?

It's all about changes. You have to change something.

I hit a plateau at 190 lbs on my way down from 220 en route to 170ish. I was able to break it by counting calories and going calorie restrictive for a while (maintenance calories - 1000/day). I also changed up my nutrition to be protein heavy (1g per lean lb of body weight per day) - that broke my plateau. Keep doing resistance training during the week and really watch your diet. Diet has been the primary engine behind my continued weight loss and plateau-busting

Quiet, you (about the readings)

:D

The long and the short of it is that my blood sugar has gone down to normality from a level where i could make a killing pissing on snow cones and selling it to the neighborhood kids because i had so much damn sugar in my bloodstream.

I'll do it in your numbers because I know the conversions.

280 isn't that really that high. I still hit that a couple times a month (as a type 1 diabetic). I was 400 when I was diagnosed, and my personal record was somewhere around 1000. Meter wouldn't test that high, its a guess based on insulin sensitivity/how much it took to get back to 500 where my meter will register. I woke up so high I was confusing the symptoms for low, treated without testing which made it worse.

Must be nice to be 300lbs because you can eat like 5000 calories and still lose weight. And you can't possibly be at a plateau yet, you most likely just started getting lazy with your exercise and diet because you've already lost 100lbs (which is still damn impressive).

Just reevaluate what you're eating and do more cardio. 1 mile a day is like a 12 minute walk at a relatively slow speed anyway and you should pick that up a lot.

I would suggest shocking your system somehow....switch your days of working out and do soemthing different....change your diet...change your method of cardio ie; tread mill for the week then the next week go to the bike or the stair master....i have a cheat day on my diet once a week to throw off my body so it doesnt do that plateau effect. Congrats on the weight loss man I know it can be tough, really though try changing everything up about every three to four weeks to push you thru that lull. Keep up the good work man.
