Maybe I'm missing something but why does everyone at the gym swing their upper body like crazy when they do standing barbell curls?

rather than work their biceps, they want to work their back and shoulders I guess.

they should drop the weight...

it's pretty obvious that a ton of ppl have horrible form and don't know what they're doing... was this even necessary

That's the logical conclusion but these people are generally pretty built. I was thinking maybe there's some sort of dynamic exercise where you try to do sudden motions to work explosive power or whatever.

I know I saw one guy doing some kind of exercise that had really quick motions and he seemed to know what he was doing.

i watched a guy like the one you're describing doing horrible form curls today bew

his posture was incorrect, elbows swinging, etc

the catch is he is a relatively larger guy and looks like he's in decent shape

like rayn said though...he's just getting a back and shoulder workout (and a poor one at that)

You can 'swing' and 'cheat' without it being bad. Most people you see just don't know what they are doing or refuse to lift their 'proper max.'

Lot's of really big guys have terrible workouts, never try to emulate based on that.

power clean maybe? that's the only thing I can think of people might do with quick motions for working on explosiveness.

It's probably bad form, but there is also BMOF or Biomechanically Optimized Form.

Here is a video of Mark McManus doing BMOF E-Z Bar Curls:

Strict form is actually unnatural. What is sometimes called ‘Biomechanically Optimized Form’ is natural. It’s natural because it works in harmony with your body’s biomechanics.

If you go outside and pick up a boulder you’re not going to bend down, put your hands underneath it and try to raise it up using ONLY your biceps. You’ll use your legs, back, chest, arms, shoulders & abs together to get that thing up. It follows that for weight-lifting, you should do the same.

it is bad form if you're attempting to isolate the biceps

Picking up a boulder is more like rounded back deadlifts....

Yeah, I would say rather than trying to make curls into some kind of compound lift, just don't bother doing curls and do some kind of compound lift.
