Can I ask why one might want protein powder over say, 5 pounds of meat from the grocery store for a third of the price? Is it a convenience thing, or is it legitimately more effective than actual meat?

Whey is easy to just pour and mix into a liquid (water or milk, water preferably).
Whey is easy to take pre or post-workout. Meat, eh, not so much.

It's a convenience and effectiveness thing.

5lbs of meat and 5lbs of whey don't contain the same amount of protein

That's fair, I just feel like from a nutrition standpoint fresh meat would be better for you so it would even out. Kind of like how a vitamin C pill can have 1000% of your daily value, but an orange is still better for you.

It's large a convenience food for people who are trying to time when they eat their protein (whey is quickly absorbed unlike say .. a steak) or for people who are trying to gain muscle because there's just only so much meat you can eat.

I think its kind of a waste for most people who are taking it for anything but partial meal replacement since most people have their diet out of wack then they go chug a protein shake like its going to do something miraculous.

I just have it as my breakfast snack because its cheap and filling.

However, I disagree it is any less nutritious than real meat. Real meat brings fat to the table, along with your usual low levels of feed-related pesticides / hormones / antibiotics / whatever if you're not into that kind of thing. Fish is expensive. Tuna has mercury.

largely depends on the meat,
but I agree with rayn , it is convenient and that's why I take it.

I live in Finland, I do not think it would be cheap for you to order where I get my protein from :D

I buy from whomever has Optimum Nutrition Gold for the cheapest on Google Shopping. They have something in their Whey that helps digest the lactose and I notice a difference in terms of how much I will be farting.

I used to use AllTheWhey but it made me too gassy to be comfortable at work :P

It seems like nobody at all understands why whey is better. It's because it has the highest bioavaiability of any protein source.

5 lbs of meat lasts a few days and 5 lbs of protein lasts a little longer than that

That's great that you looked that up on the internet and all - but do you actually know what that means?
