Who uses it?
I'm thinking of getting some but I'd like to know if there's a good cheap place to get it.
Also, is chalk chalk? Or are there some better types? I really don't know.

Gloves suck. They make shit harder to hold. I like to feel the bar.

You could use liquid chalk (Bodybuilding.com - Xtreme Formulations Liquid Chalk - Clean Hand Technology! On sale now! (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/xf/chalk.html)). Doesn't work as good as regular chalk but I found it to be a decent enough replacement and it doesn't leave any mess/signs that it was used.
For the record I ordered this:
Amazon.com: 3 oz. Chalk Ball for Gymnastics, Climbing, and Weight Lifting: Toys & Games (http://www.amazon.com/Chalk-Gymnastics-Climbing-Weight-Lifting/dp/B001KGA1L6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1251045706&sr=8-8)

Neat.
They also banned cut-off jean shorts at the same time. I wonder if there is a way I could get around that too, lol.
TechnoDonut 08-23-2009, 03:56 PM They don't allow chalk at my gym. You don't need it. Just wear gloves.
Also chalk doesn't improve grip, it keeps your hands dry. If you feel you really must use some, just get the cheap stuff. You don't need any of that crap with drying agents or anything in it. I got a gigantic bag of all natural chalk from my climbing gym for like $5.
Chalk certainly does improve your grip if your hands are sweating like crazy :)

You know what I mean...
dry hands > chalked hands > wet hands
as far as grip goes.

Eh - chalk has more benefits than just keeping your hands dry. It can help to reduce callous formation:

My grip gives out when deadlifting over 450 if I don't have chalk on my hands... Regardless of how dry they are.

This is true for me as well.
Of course, I have no doubt my grip would also give out with chalk so the point seems moot.

I think my lower back would give out first over my grip.

TechnoDonut 08-25-2009, 07:58 AM Yeah... I still think that lashings or gloves would work much better than chalk. Much less mess too.
*shrug* I have a shitload of callus buildup on my hand from deadlifts and pullups and whatever else.
Gloves always seemed retarded to me. Take the weight like a man. Use your hands.
Glare 08-25-2009, 08:35 AM i get bad callouses from pullups but the advice in that article is pretty good (grip with your fingers not your palms)
it's pretty much unavoidable and i refuse to wear gloves when i lift

Yup - Pullups I think do it the worst to me - because I grip the bar all the way in the bottom of my palm so I can hold on longer while my sweaty hands start slipping.
I think chalk will help a lot with pullups - and maybe I won't get such bad callouses when I grip at my fingers instead.
