Hell Phoenix 08-10-2009, 03:19 PM So I remember there being a thread about this product/routine a while ago, but after searching through the first 11 pages of this forum, I found nothing and don't donate money here so I can't use the search feature.
I was wondering if anyone here has used the P90X routine and I am curious how (if) they benefited from the product. I know when I google "Does P90X really work?" there are a bunch of websites that come up that say "Yes, it does and this is why..." but to be honest, I feel like they are all trying to just advertise the product. So I wanted to know if anyone here has used the product and what their results were.
I am 22 years old, just under 6ft tall, weigh about 192lbs and consider myself physically fit. My bench ( 3x10 ) is at 200lbs, skull crushes (3x10) with 90lbs, squat around 250lbs. Basically I am not out of shape (though I know I can improve in some areas and pay much more attention to other areas). I want to burn some of the "fat" that i have left on my body but don't want to go through this program and essentially loose my strength. How would this program benefit me? Could I continue my normal workout on top of this to retain muscle mass or is this going to slim me down and tone me more?
Any input would be great. Thanks in advance.
Falhawk 08-10-2009, 03:32 PM I'm about 20 days into the regular p90 and I like it a lot. I haven't worked out in probably 6 years. I was a fat skinny guy, if that makes sense. I'm 6'2, was 180 now more like 170ish. I think the p90x would have been way more than I could handle at this point and would have likely led me to quit quickly. The p90 is perfect because I have no time for the gym and I can do it in my house with very little equipment.
If you stick with it I can't see how you WOULDN'T be in better shape at the end of 90 days. The system also comes with a pretty detailed diet if you want to follow that too.
Some may come in and talk about crossfit. Crossfit looks cool and all but I dunno it just sort of seems disorganized. I like having the video to follow along with because obviously if I haven't worked out in 6 years I wouldn't have enough self motivation to do those things on my own. Still I might consider it when I finish p90 just to give it a shot. There's a crossfit gym near me but its expensive and again I get back to scheduling. Its already been difficult to get my workout in and no miss days.
I know Patton's also doing the p90 and a few other TW'ers have done the p90x
Glare 08-10-2009, 03:37 PM cross fit is designed to keep your body from adapting to a routine
i havent done p90, p90x, or crossfit but i think you're taking a step in the right direction by doing one of these programs to lose some weight
just remember that it's easy to lose weight but much harder to successfully keep it off
Phalanx 08-10-2009, 03:44 PM you can find the routines and see that they are pretty rough, i was dying my first few weeks. when i started i could do maybe 30 total pullups and a few shitty reps, now i can probably do 100 clean ones. physique wise this program will lean you more than bulk. i think the only change to the routine i'd make is to add bench in place of pushups

Pushups are actually a better exercise than bench press.
yeah, p90x does a lot for you. i did it for about 2 months a while back and saw some positive results, having previously never had any particular training regimen, dove straight into it. it kicks your ass, and in my case i got tired of it really quick

100 pullups? what?

You mean push-ups right?
if you don't, you're some kind of superhuman.
SteveDave 08-11-2009, 02:59 AM Maybe he means the total of the different kinds of pullups? How many sets are there in Chest and Back, 3 or 4?
Still a lot though, god damn.
Glare 08-11-2009, 08:02 AM well if he started as an out of shape guy doing 30 pullups im just going to call bullshit right there
Hell Phoenix 08-11-2009, 09:30 AM well if he started as an out of shape guy doing 30 pullups im just going to call bullshit right there
Yeah I was going to call him out on that... lol.
Phalanx 08-11-2009, 09:47 AM i did say total... in 7 or 8 sets.
dont be douches
edit:nobody douched-out on these guys in the other thread who did better than me
i could barely do 1 or 2 pullup's without the extra support of the chair. at the very end of month 2, or maybe the first week of week 3 i did 110 pullup's in the same excersize without any support. straight pullup's. they were in sets of 16 or 20 without breaks, once i was on the bar i would keep going until i did 16. so it obviously makes a difference.
I finished p90x last week. I had decent results. I lost about 10 lbs during the program and gained a fair amount of muscle. I'm reasonably happy with the results. I started off not being able to do any pull-ups and ended up being able to do 7-10 per set (One Monday routine has 8-10 sets of pull-ups). So in that regard it was a huge improvement.
Hell Phoenix 08-11-2009, 10:17 AM I'm used to hearing about pullups in forms of either a certain number per each set or a total number when maxing out.... not a total figure of all your sets combined. Forgive me, your wording was different from the norm. That's good that you can do 110 total, seriously.
Trinston 08-11-2009, 10:38 AM I have been doing P90X on and off since March. If you follow the program you will get good results. I was pretty out of shape when I started, could do a few pushups, maybe 1 pullup. I jumped right into it and modified when I needed to like they say. After 2 months I had lost weight and put on some mass. I was able to actually do pullups and pushups.
I have been doing the strength exercises every week since then, and just recomitted myself to the full program again last week. I was at 21% body fat when I started, I now stay around 11-12%. I am confident I can get to 8% in the next couple months.
Since you are doing weights now I am not sure if you will bulk up any, I would always try to increase my weights from week to week and managed to bulk up some, but it is still more of a toning program. I have a lean and cut appearance with good functional strength.
If that is what you want then go for it. Also, didn't follow the diet plan, just ate healthier. And I still hate Yoga.
you dropped 10% bf in 2 months?
wow
Falhawk 08-11-2009, 11:37 AM how do you measure bf%?
calipers (more accurate) or those fancy scales (less accurate)
How To Measure Bodyfat Using Calipers - 100% Accurate Method - Muscle & Strength (http://www.muscleandstrength.com/tools/how-to-measure-bodyfat-using-calipers.html)
Trinston 08-11-2009, 12:11 PM Oh if that is in reference to me no way did I mean 10% in the first 2 months. The first month and a half of this I actually had basically a 0-1% change, but the results were extremely noticeable to me after the first 30 days. Shortly after that body fat just started melting off to my current point.
I lost 10% over 5 months.
Xandris 08-11-2009, 05:06 PM And I still hate Yoga.
This... If I had ANY experience with Yoga I think I wouldn't have had such a problem, but trying to keep good form WHILE watching the DVD is a joke. Everything else allows you to see how he does it, but with the different positions (head down - face to the floor, head up, face the sky) I found it frustrating.
Phantred 08-12-2009, 05:58 PM my gf has been on my about working out with her instead of my usual gym time(she doesn't get off work\school till 10pm) so I decided we'd give p90x a try. I wasn't expecting much from an at home workout on a video, but I'm on day 3 and already love it.
In the very least, it will be a great change in variety of exercises, away from my usual 'lift heavy' routines.
