I've been trying to add this to my workout (per Starting Strength), but I just can't whip my elbows underneath the bar fast enough, so I end up with really really sore shoulders.

Is it just a practice thing, or are there complimentary exercises I can do to help?

Do it with an empty bar. Get the form down right.
