travelyan 07-01-2009, 10:14 PM Benzer 07-01-2009, 10:42 PM It's got kind of a Gin Blossoms/Ben Folds crossed with Blink 182 thing going on. assfrags 07-01-2009, 11:38 PM Drums could use some reverb or saturation to make them sound less fake. travelyan 07-02-2009, 03:44 AM snare could certainly be a little thicker. kick's too loud. how's the mix overall? my ears are too tired to tell anymore Felonius 07-02-2009, 08:27 AM I like the rhythm guitar sound... You should look out for better drum samples though, like Kontakt Battery. Programming the drums in MIDI then sending it through Battery (as a VST instrument in Cubase SX or something) would do wonders. FruityLoops is pretty nub IMO. (No offense, I used to use it too.) travelyan 07-02-2009, 01:31 PM edit: see OP old_skul 07-02-2009, 02:08 PM The guitars sound great (guitar rig maybe?). No input there other than great job. Good parts, good layering, good tones. A little tiny thin at the top of the joint. The drum samples as Fel mentions are a little weak. That kick is mega loud, as are some of the toms. Your snare sound is awful (sorry) and some of the rolls are obviously 12121212121212 type of stuff :) That's okay though, it's better drum programming than I could do. I would do away with the china cymbal. There's a product called EZDrummer you ought to look into. Is there even bass on this tune? :) Vocals. The vocal sounds good, not loud enough, too much reverb, not in-your-face enough for this tune. I'd like to know what your vocal chain was - mic, preamp, etc. You need to be right up on whatever mic you're using, with a pop filter in place, and you need to FUCKING SING, with conviction, loudly, to the point where you're about to eject your larynx. More of the "OH YEAH" at the end of the bridge. Also, the vocal shows a lack of production. I would double the vocal on the prechorus, and then add a harmony on the chorus - a 3rd above and maybe an octave below. And do something weird on the bridge. And turn that damn pitch correction off. The keys at the end are ghey :) But whateva! And that's less than 45 things. old_skul 07-02-2009, 02:11 PM The 2nd mix sounds way better. I can hear the harmonies on the precho now. travelyan 07-02-2009, 02:21 PM just the man i wanted to see for the guitar its my carvin going into a Pod XT. everyone has said the guitar sounds great so i think i'll stick with where it is, maybe bump the treble up a hair like you said did you listen to the new one or the one from yestreday cause i turned the kick way down, still too loud? depending on what headphones i use i've got too much bass or too little... but i mixed it with the sennheiser hd280s on... you're saying to turn bass guitar up? how many DBs? going to look into a different snare sample. i don't like it either but it sounded good at first... now the vocals were a shure sm58 directly into a flat EQ mixer, out of the mixer to my laptop.. dont have a pop filter, was about 6 inches away in the verses and 2 feet away or more when getting loud. when i do "get loud" i start to get that teenager sound or i go into the "OH YEAH" territory, the middle ground just starts to hurt my throat. maybe i'll cover something by slipknot just to see if i can do it ;)... pitch correction lol? no pitch correction going on, what makes it sound like that? what i want to do is find a "sound" so i can "set" everything in my software and my effects and leave it there, that way a whole album would sound cohesive, as you know all my recordings to now have sounded different as i learn travelyan 07-02-2009, 02:35 PM p.s i'd be happy to separate all the tracks out into wavs or mp3s if you'd like to take a crack at mixing it old_skul 07-02-2009, 02:51 PM I was commenting off the first version you posted. The 2nd mix is way better. Any particular setting on the XT? I have an XT Live. I would bump the bass up at least 2dB. For vocals: I would invest in a better mic for recording. A 58 is an awesome mic for live work but has a pretty strong "presence peak" on vocals that doesn't lend itself to recording very well. This explains why your vocal sounds a tiny bit on the thin side. I recommend an MXL mic for your purposes - it'll do great as a vocal mic, and can record practically anything else way better than your 58. I recommend the V63 that Musician's Friend sells for $49 with a free cable (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-V63M-Condenser-Studio-Microphone?sku=273157#new ). You will be blown away how much better it sounds. You need to use a pop filter to sing into it, though. You can either buy one ($20) or make one out a coathanger and a leg of pantyhose (much more sexy + ghetto touch). You can also try using a rubber band and a pencil on the front of the mic, which theoretically will protect the capsule from blasted Ps. Are you using the microphone input on your laptop? You need an audio interface. This Presonus USB interface will do the job for $149. (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-AudioBox-USB?sku=243007) Oh, and about buying gear - Musician's Friend is great with free shipping, but American Musical Supply lets you do 3 monthly payments for purchases above $300. That's how I was able to afford half the crap in my studio - some nice R0DE mics, Cubase 5, my firewire interface.... old_skul 07-02-2009, 02:53 PM p.s i'd be happy to separate all the tracks out into wavs or mp3s if you'd like to take a crack at mixing it I'd love to. Bundle everything up as individual wav files with a zero reference point so I can put them where they belong and I'll have a go at it. travelyan 07-02-2009, 03:01 PM i'll do that tonight when i get home from work travelyan 07-04-2009, 02:00 AM i'll get around to it soon. just been overworked lately. as far as the setting on the pod xt it's just one of the defaults, "Line6 Agro", with the drive and treble cut by about half old_skul 07-04-2009, 05:40 PM I know that preset. That's a good one. Tomorrow would be a pretty good day for a remix, so take 10 minutes and zip that shit up. travelyan 07-05-2009, 11:30 PM shit. i've had to keep my computer turned off due to bad weather (lightning and stuff). i'll zip it up tonight, obviously no big hurry... edit: lets make that, wednesday. :( old_skul 07-08-2009, 12:44 AM :P travelyan 07-08-2009, 11:57 AM yep it's wednesday, i'll get it to ya today old_skul 07-09-2009, 03:52 PM /me checks PMs /tumbleweeds assfrags 07-09-2009, 04:19 PM He is doing you a favor, this would take minutes. | ||
