Hands down, the difference between fighting in Open RVR on your own alongside pubbies versus just 1 or 2 BEagles is night and day. Last night proved that in spades.
[STORY TIME!]
Started the night off by myself, in Avelorn. I thought, "what the hell, I'll spend some time in Open RVR and just see what it's like". Wow... way to prove my Gamer's Tourettes Syndrome. Nothing reinforces "futility" like being the only armour wearing class surrounded by ArchMages and RunePriests and still dying after getting dotted a dozen times by Sorcs and Shammans. Running past A Rune Priest being chased by 4 BO's and a Marauder who just stands there like they'll just twirl that little stick of theirs and everything will be A-O-K.
Watching a Keep Siege where you can see what needs to be done, but no one seems to be collectively motivated to do it. You can't do it... because it can't be done by yourself. Everyone builds "Repeating AoE Ballista's", where they will work awesome against... the door, the oil and the 4 Repeaters on the wall raping everyone below. It sucked. If I wasn't so stubborn in times like those, I'd have just logged off. I didn't though, and so the self flagellation continued (to the shagrin of everyone on Vent I'm sure.).
Then, just when I think the day is lost and nothing worth salvaging was to be had (when everyone else seemed to be logging off)... on logs [Warrior Priest] Unce of the Blood Eagle. Across the bridge he came and I swear on Sigmar's name, I immediately scored no less then 4 kill shots... and the sun shone brightly, melting grey clouds away. We proceeded to work in tandem as a tag team and bodies were felled like trees in an old growth forest. We were joined by a Pubbie Engineer who obviously recognized what efficiency and progress looked like... he seemed to have half a brain too... so we added him and our dance card now had three!
We proceeded to engage in Guerrilla type fighting along the western wall of the keep towards the Destro War Camp. We would hide behind a big rock and knock passing players off their mounts before mauling them.
PROTIP:
Never attack the first guy coming over the hill until you see how many more are right behind him
The Engineer demonstrated unnatural guile for a pubbie by placing his turret in a bush along the path of the Postern Doors. That proved deviously clever as the Destro grew wise and attempted to flee away from us towards that door, only to get chased into a turret that knocks them off their mounts. And so ended the first half an hour... and it was good.
During the second half hour [Blade Master] Hong (of the Blood Eagle) appeared! Oh... and things got even better. If you listened close enough... you could almost hear the tickety-tack of panicked typing on keyboards shouting:
"Open the door! Open the door! oh gawd OH GAWD! They are coming! For the love of the Raven let us in!"
as they flailed away at the postern doors which apparently became bugged for a time at one point and wouldn't let anyone through. When they realized fate was something predetermined for them... the delicate tinkle of urine on polished elvern stonework played the melody of fear which was then promptly drowned out by crude notes of Hammer, Axe and Sword against flesh bits.
At one point I was getting cocky... so I boldly presented the Blood Eagle Standard on a tall rock in plain view, clearly visible to War Camp and Keep alike.
The keep may be yours, but the Gardens are all belong to us!"
it taunted arrogantly back at the foaming-mouths of Destro all collecting in their War Camp. Soon it became clear that numbers off vengeful destro were growing, so were ours, but things were quickly becoming disproportionate (more then normal). As UNCE and Hong guarded the Postern Doors hiding in bushes, lying in ambush for any destro willing to run the blockade.... I was with the standard, behind a big Rock... when I noticed a large group of mounted Destro leaving the War Camp en force. Realizing that I was by myself and the others were too far way to help... the group too small to challenge these destro anyways... I decided to decoy them away, like the noble captain of a troope should, I shouted a final instruction;
"Stay where you are! Keep hidden they are too many for us, I will draw them away!"
With that, I dashed out from behind my rock waving my Banner like a giant pork chop on a stick. Apparently the destro were hungry too because I watched as the entire line of Mounts wheeled in my direction!
Realizing that my little dwarvern legs would not carry me fast enough to the safety of the Order Camp, I began stowing my Banner. All I had to do was run far enough to delay them from reaching me until the Banner was safe. Then, with the Banner safe, I resigned myself to my gruesome (but glorious!) fate by promptly turning into the charging line of Destro. 10 on 1 seemed hardly sporting, but never the less I loosed my first throwing axe and knocked the first destro of his Warpig. I then passed through the line of mounts and kneecapped another off his ride before bringing my Rune Etched Axe around in a circle, sending many more Destro flying.
"You may kill me today! But know that I will not make it easy on you!"
As the ring of fate closed in around me to seemingly seal my doom... a pleasant surprise! My troope of Fine BEagles apparently saw fit to disobey their noble Captain (much to my blooming delight) and so at my side were Hong and Unce! At least on this day I will not die alone!
10 on 3... I'm liking these odds!
But wait there is more!
Apparently my BEagles brought friends and not just a few, so now its 20+3 on 10! Oh, how revenge is sweet... messy, but delightfully sweet. The Cavalry of Green Tags crashed into the furball of melee mayhem and soon the Destro were strung out, hunted down and squashed.
and on the cold elvern wind a maniacally dwarfish cackle could be heard sounding through the night forest.
From there things eventually made their way back to the keep where I took this picture:

With that... a night of Warhammer that seemed lost was rescued and made right for a good way to end this true story...
To be continued?
