What (gameplay-wise) is wrong with Legions?MikSchultzy 06-08-2008, 01:17 PM Shit, I didn't even know that there was a game out that you could play. Could someone pm me some basic info so I can get in on this? Darkstrand 06-08-2008, 01:17 PM it seems to me he indicated that better "models, better sounds, better art / texturing" wasn't going to happen. Is one new weapon model really all you have to cling to? Darkstrand 06-08-2008, 01:22 PM Yes. Do you have much experience with Legions? Whether you do or don't, I'm curious as to what you think qualifies Legions as "shoddily made." yes. I"ve played legions and looked at the models. If you can't tell how its shoddily made look at a game with legitimate production value. the games being made on a half of a shoe string budget and it shows. maybe you can make a good game with 2 shoelaces but not with 1/4th of 2 shoelaces. Darklord 06-08-2008, 01:23 PM It still isn't open mik, not sure exactly when that is happening. And DS...read my post. Seriously. They said a while ago they would be updating different parts of the art, and now they have started releasing these changes. What more do you want, honestly? I mean, if you are just assuming that every word out of the dev's mouth's are lies, despite evidence to the contrary, there isn't really anything to debate. NoFiX 06-08-2008, 01:27 PM Are...you serious? You said there would never be new models in just your last post, and so I give you an example of one coming next push, and magically now it doesn't matter? I will admit I don't care one bit about a new rocket model, but I'm pretty damn sure that it shows that they are committed to working on the art. I really do question your sanity. If the entire direction of art changes then it matters you googly fuck. This game looks like dog shit roasting out in your moms chafed thighs. Blitz 06-08-2008, 01:30 PM it seems to me he indicated that better "models, better sounds, better art / texturing" wasn't going to happen. Is one new weapon model really all you have to cling to? And then another, and then another, and then another and then all of the sudden "LOL NEW MODELS AND ART SO WHAT IT STILL SUCKS" give it up already. We enjoy the game, you don't so why do you insist on barging into every legions thread to spew the same garbage? Darklord 06-08-2008, 01:30 PM Er, ok? At least think up some meaningful insults. If you really loathe the art direction, I don't think anyone can help you, but that is just a personal preference thing, not a fundamental flaw in the game. Not to mention it really doesn't look different then most major titles of recent years. Darkstrand 06-08-2008, 01:31 PM so darklord do you still think legions will just be very unsuccessful and not a complete failure? NoFiX 06-08-2008, 01:32 PM Er, ok? This is 2008, and Tribes 2 looks so much better side-by-side. Just admit it you cock gobbling foreskin lint eating faggot. Blitz 06-08-2008, 01:32 PM I would invite darkstrand to the pickup tonight also, but I'd imagine his lack of skill and constant failing would soon deviate into him blaming it all on the game, followed by lots of annoying ventrilo chatter and him leaving or being kicked. Blitz 06-08-2008, 01:33 PM If this was 2002, Tribes 2 art / modeling / texturing / etc would completely invalidate Legions. NoFiX 06-08-2008, 01:34 PM Is it normal to have lint on your foreskin? i dunno. if you want, later, you can tug on mine a bit. Blitz 06-08-2008, 01:37 PM i dunno. if you want, later, you can tug on mine a bit. Sorry faggot, no. Blitz 06-08-2008, 01:37 PM so darklord do you still think legions will just be very unsuccessful and not a complete failure? Just answer one question, why do you continue to post in every single legions thread if you hate the game sooooooooooooooooo much. Don't you think that makes you look kind of like a faggot? Because it does. MikSchultzy 06-08-2008, 01:44 PM It still isn't open mik, not sure exactly when that is happening. Ahhh, ok. Thanks for the answer. Anywho, I'm interested in it for no other reason than that it will be "Tribes-Like". Otherwise, I'm still playing Battlefield because it's the closest that I can get to the Tribes feel nowadays. :( Darklord 06-08-2008, 01:49 PM try emailing FELopenbeta@garagegames.c om with the email you used to open your IA account ZOD 06-08-2008, 03:02 PM To the op, here's a nice steaming pile of :member: as your answer. eMOxygen 06-08-2008, 03:19 PM Legions is half a game with 1 developer working on it. Rampancy 06-08-2008, 03:56 PM From MungeParty: Many of the problems mentioned in this thread have already been addressed, they just haven't been released yet. Players going OOB is incredibly stupid because we don't have repeating terrain working with the new optimized terrain system so they would just fall off the terrain. Taking a look at the reasoning behind that request reveals the actual problem: levels are too small. Newer levels will be four times the size of the current maps and will be tailored more towards continuous fluid movement. The complaints about OD may seem silly to beta vets, but if you think back you'll remember everyone being shocked at the health cost of OD from the beginning. The regs will recall that outrider will have a much lower OD health cost and I wouldn't be against lowering the OD health cost a bit in general. These are things we'll have to test out in balance sessions once we start playing around with new classes and items and stuff. One of the biggest problems with Legions right now is that combat is stupid because movement is way too unpredictable. I'm a little baffled by anyone claiming that defense is overpowered right now, but I'm willing to chalk that up to inexperience. Consider that less upward jet energy doesn't have to mean less air time. Also consider that maybe you're actually moving up extremely fast, but because you're moving so fast (or moderately fast.. 90 yuk yuk) horizontally (compared to the much more deliberate and vertical movement in Tribes game) that your vertical movement only seems gimped. The phsyics have been tweaked to encourage smooth movement (rather than jerky movement). Upward jet thrust is weaker and upward jet energy drain is lowered a ton. Lateral acceleration is nerfed just a touch to encourage more deliberate movement and make player movement a little bit more predictable allowing for those long shots that we all love. In the same spirit as the changes mentioned above, uphill movement is much easier, allowing you to launch yourself off of hills easily, and downward jetting is now possible while on the ground at a constant energy drain. Along with the movement changes, the projectile speeds have been increased on the CG and RL to increase emphasis on combat and teamwork. These changes are based on a lot of great feedback. They may be overkill or they may be too subtle, but we won't know that until we get people playing with those changes and giving feedback. I know I keep saying this, but the older beta members can attest to this: we will be making frequent changes to the game based on feedback. It may not seem like it now, but I was making a bunch of changes back and forth each week for a while at the beginning of beta to make the game a little more playable for the first small stretch. We took a little break from that to focus on stabilizing the game (we've cleared out hundreds of bugs in the past month and we're finishing up testing on the first dedicated servers), but we're going to start making a lot of rapid changes and new additions to the game very soon. On the topic of Tribesishness, we could've easily made a Tribes clone. People like Andrew like to point out all the mistakes we made in creating a Tribes game, but the fact is: anyone can clone Tribes and our engine is cheap enough that anyone can afford it. It's really not hard. We wanted to do something different, so we did. Legions has drawn a lot of attention from the Tribes community because of some unfortunate public statements and a familiar flavor of game that hasn't gotten love in quite some time. Tribes is obviously a huge inspiration for Legions, but it's not the blueprint. I'm not blind to the fact that an enormous chunk of our community is Tribes players (which I'm not unhappy with in the least bit), but if Legions is ever successful that won't always be the case because Tribes players are just a tiny subslice of the gaming public - and I'd hope that anyone who sees even the slightest glimmer of potential in Legions would wish it to become popular and healthy. I'm more than willing to hook Tribes players up with whatever they need to make their Legions experience better, but I really wish some folks would try a little harder to realistically evaluate the context in which Legions exists. We aren't a triple-A title with loads of resources. That means that the game may lack in complexity at first, but it also means we're not constrained to a design document written years before the game was ever played. We can experiment with all sorts of stuff. Vehicles don't have a place in Legions right now. Neither do base assets. That's because there are much more fundamental features and balance issues that need attention first and foremost. This isn't your run-of-the-mill beta and it won't be a typical open beta either. Legions will continue development as long as there's interest and an active community, but for that to work I need you guys to be a little patient and keep things alive. That means keeping off each other's throats too. It may seem like I'm being critical of the feedback given, but the truth is we need feedback like this. I just want to make sure everyone has realistic expectations of things to come. Legions will not be "feature complete" for some time. Legions coming out of beta will simply mean that we think it's stable enough to continue development publicly. This "live development" thing is not a marketing ploy, it's a different way of doing things. We've got a long way to go. So yes, a lot of things are being worked on. Legions will be going through perpetual live development. Hence this thread. Thanks to all of the people who have made actual contributions so far, at some point I'll put together a list of any new issues you bring up to post in the Legions beta forums. travelyan 06-08-2008, 03:57 PM can't load the thing on my MACINTOSH APPLE COMPUTER | ||
