You cannot participate unless you join up on vent, it is not required to talk or have a mic but you need to be in there.
PM Me or Darklord for the vent address. Neither of the servers we use are mine, so I don't know how they feel about me giving it out.

But ya, dedicated servers ARE currently out, but still in early stages.

It shouldn't be that long before you can put up your own, though.
