I been looking for some free WoW servers and was surprised to see there are an awful lot. My questions to the WoW TW population is do any of you play on any of them, which is the best, and what is it's population like?

Thanks for your time.

Private Servers = worthless.

Just go play Diablo 2 with a trainer or something.

Last time I tried they were buggy as hell (instances didn't work, some skills didn't work, etc.), several patches behind and sparsely populated. Don't waste your time.

private servers have tons of bugs and problems, I wouldnt recommend it

Above statements are totally correct about private servers. I'm currently playing on www.xaoswow.org. Decent server, but like I just said, warriors don't build rage against mages, some key skills are buggy, you run into about 1/5 of the quests not working, etc...

I just kind of shrug it off though. I got the game for free and I haven't paid yet... So I'm really just getting what I paid for.

If you're wanting the real WOW experience, it's obvious you have to pay to play. But I got about 4-5 of my friends to sign up on this buggy, disconnecting server, and we've been having a good time.

Really, well that is unfortunate, you'd figure with a game as popular as WoW there would be a larger, stable, free server base. Well if anyone thinks of ones, tries one out, let me know.

toxic-wow and wowscape have decent content, even basic BGs working.

1000+ online at all times. some instability but it depends on patch cycle.

the emulators are getting better, stronger, etc. it wont be long until you can play solid pvp with instant-70s on privates. mark my words.

whats the point, theres no sense of accomplishment... if all you care about is seeing end boss graphics, go for it... but thats all its for, seeing content. no one takes pvp or pve seriously on these

whats the point, theres no sense of accomplishment... don't play for a sense of accomplishment, play to play a game. making things take long doesn't give me a sense of accomplishment anyway.

Honestly, I just play with 4-5 friends for free. We have fun questing, dueling, and messing with all the idiots on the server.

There's a little PVP/PVE at the end game, but like I've already said, I know I'm just getting what I paid for.

actually, there have been and will be pvp-only servers with BGs and arenas. wowscape runs one, i think, and toxic-wow had one for a while.

wowscape had 3k on their BG server, at times.

toxic usually had a steady 1000+ on their BG server.

as the server code gets better, expect these to get wildly popular... esp when things are balanced enough to setup real ladders.

ps. if you think a game needs something to grind, you've been playing wow too long :D

I tried that WoWscape server. Its awful. Crashes every 20 minutes. Playing there would be a grind in itself. Ill look at that toxic one, but after I saw how many ppl play WoWscape for how often it crashed, I don't expect much.

defining "sense of accomplishment"

from my perspective: arena and rank. no rank/competition? people will just fuck around in arena. fucking around is only so fun for a while for me and i would have quit wow a long time ago if it weren't for arena.

from the pve'er/raider perspective (not mine!): they have two goals in mind, loot and progression... assuming encounters are easier, and epix are free... where is the challenge and therefore fun?

maybe if these servers banded together to form a battlegroup and maintained arena ranks things would be more interesting

I've been playing on Wowscape lately and frankly I'm having a lot more fun on this server than at any other time during retail. It's free, stable and most importantly it doesn't try to whip you to death with timesinks. I'm on the 5x exp server (10x quest) and since I can use hacks when no one is around I've managed to hit 60 without it feeling like a second job (plus I can fly).

I'm not sure if it used to be a lot worse, but all the worthwhile content works, the server rarely crashes and only for a short time (5-10min), the population is large and engaged in all types of PvP. More importantly though nothing gets handed to you. It's basically retail for free without all the tedium.

Anyone else playing on WoWcrack?
