Mass Effect's new DRM Scheme (http://kotaku.com/5008452/bioware-backs-down-from-draconian-mass-effect-authentication)

Front Page Article (http://www.tribalwar.com/news/5437-Mass-Effects-new-DRM-Scheme.html)

When Mass Effect comes to the computer it will not use SecuROM's 10-day periodic re-authentication and instead will use a modification to do only a one-time online authentication, Bioware announced today.

What is the difference between the old PC disc authentication solution and the new online model?

First, authentication of discs has now gone from the physical format to the online format, freeing the need for consumers to have a disc in the drive at all times.

Second, with online authentication consumers now connect to the Internet the first time the game is launched and are required only to reconnect if they are downloading new game content.

This is good news. I don't mind one time activation, but the way it was slated before, it would seem like more of a chore to do reactivation every week.

It's odd that you guys keep reporting on Mass Effect, but haven't mentioned anything about Spore. Spore was also slated to use the 10 day copy protection, but EA backed down on it for Spore too.

One-time activation and no CD requirement to play. This seems perfect imho. It's pretty much what Stardock games (ie. Galactic Civilizations 2) do.
