Not the first time a story like this has come out, but it has some comments from Comcast.

A Comcast insider tells me the company is considering implementing very clear monthly caps, and may begin charging overage fees for customers who cross them. While still in the early stages of development, the plan -- as it stands now -- would work like this: all users get a 250GB per month cap. Users would get one free "slip up" in a twelve month period, after which users would pay a $15 charge for each 10 GB over the cap they travel. According to the source, the plan has "a lot of momentum behind it," and initial testing is slated to begin in a month or two.

This could seriously suck...

Considering how much crap I've had to put up with from Comcast, any implementation of this plan would motivate me to finally cancel all services.

They've already shown their willingness to defraud me of money by withholding "credits" I was explicitly told I'd be granted for service outages. They will more than likely use this plan in order to continue along the same lines, only in a larger scale.

Comcast also fucks with competing VOIP services and throttles back connection speeds. Good luck trying to prove the former, though.

Too bad the government refuses to do anything about massive conglomerates/monopolies these days.

I just switched to Surewest from Comcast, FO line with 10Mbps up and down is nice. I hope they don't start capping their shit too.

We get (from one ISP) 60GB/month at $129.95

If you exceed your allowance, its an additional usage charge at $0.15/MB

So while you complain about $15 for 25 GB more, we would pay (Australia) 25 * 1000 * 0.15 = $3,750 in additional fees :)

I guess it is all relative.

No way I use anywhere near 250GB a month on my Comcast account.

When I had ADSL in Australia my monthly cap was 40gb per month.


Seems obvious to me that in the not to distant future internet services will be charged based on how much traffic is actually generated.

To hit that mark, you would have to average 7.8gb a day in traffic. For one person, that's quite a lot.

Anyone have numbers on how much data you transmit in 4 hours of website usage and IM chatting, and 2 hours of videogame playing? What if you add on 10 MP3 downloads? What if you add on 30 minutes of Youtube viewing, 2 hour-long podcasts, or 30 minutes of streaming music?

Then put that across 5 or 6 roomates?

i average about 50gigs a month the last time I checked. This including gaming, alot of bting, etc

sucks EH?I haven't seen overage fees here though. I'm on a 100GB cap right now with Shaw, but if you exceed it all they do is call/email you to complain, and possible cut off your service if you don't fix the problem.

Well this would get me out of the contract I just got with them. It would be much cheaper for me to switch services.

What is the whole point of upping your speed if you'll just reach the cap faster? Right now I average about 10GB a day and have had peaks around 50GB so this would fuck me over pretty good.

Can someone care to tell me how this isn't illegal under a form of bait and switch and why nobody has filed law suits about it?

As a practicality, If I were a subscriber to comcast, I would be happy if the cap was higher, like 400gb/month.

13.3gb/day versus 8.3gb/day is a lot easier(assuming 30 day months).

Because of this article I'm going to begin monitoring my usage out of curiosity.
