Radon006 05-05-2008, 04:30 PM This year. I've been plagued with some mean tendonesis in my knees particularly the right, but after buying a pair of these:
Pro-Tec Patellar Tendon Knee Strap Medium - Free Shipping Best Value | The Therapy Connection at HPMS, Inc. (http://the-therapy-connection.com/ProTec-Patellar-Tendon-Knee-Strap-Medium/M/B000KC4FCW.htm?utm_campai gn=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle)
I figured I'd try running again! Unfortunately there was some stupid track meet, so I only got to do a warmup mile before I had to leave the track, but I was able to crank out a relatively comfortable mile in 7:45ish, which I consider good since it was relatively easy, and I've never been a runner.
Unfortunately my knee is now quite sore, but I the strap will be more helpful next time. Tighter, and further up.
Since we don't really have a (short distance) running thread, I figure people can come here to brag about there 400m, mile, 5k, etc. times. Maybe get some competition going. If anyone's got some good training ideas to improve shorter distances that'd be cool too. I know I always hear about Tempo running so improve form, and some people talk about intervals for speed, but first hand info would be cool.
Current Records:
Mile:
1) Anomaly 5:24
2) Radon006 6:55
blazindave 05-06-2008, 09:39 PM Congratulations.
Also, i like that you actually went outside instead of on a treadmill.
Good for you.
Make sure you land on the ball of your foot FIRST and not heel first. Keep your knees always bent and make sure that it's a straight line from the middle of your head down to where you take a step.
I think doing stuff like snatch or power cleans would probably help your explosiveness for shorter distances.
Fartlek also works as does sprinting randomly during long distance running.
Good luck.
Amazon Jim 05-08-2008, 09:06 PM 7:45 is pretty decent. Now run that or 7:30 for the next 5 days and then increase to 2 miles.
Repeat and take time off as needed (no more than 2 days at most).
I'm running every morning at 5:30.
Radon006 05-08-2008, 09:18 PM I just ran my second mile today... this time 6:55
Best mile time of my life!
Also my knee is sore as shit.
ZodiaK 05-08-2008, 10:02 PM ice & tylenol
Radon006 05-09-2008, 01:22 AM ice & tylenol
I hit it with ice and aleve... also wore patellar strap around tonight, but it still not feeling wonderful
actually i'm starting to think the tendon is getting ready to tear :/
Fartypants 05-09-2008, 07:21 AM 1) if anything hurts dont run
2) if anything hurts for 2 weeks, see a doctor (although from your post it would seem you've done that already)
be sure to do some ITB stretches before and after running
Glare 05-09-2008, 08:36 AM my buddy had tendonitis last october and he rested his knee the entire winter
it still gives him problems now
so you should probably see a doc before you really fuck something up
Radon006 05-09-2008, 02:17 PM I've seen a few doc's.
the last one said try using a patellar band for a while and see if it improves. Until yesterday I was pretty sure it had been, but right now it feels worse than it ever has. I'll give it a rest and lay off the running, but surgery was the next option so we'll see.
I think running, and especially at near my maximum 1 mile pace was probably a stupid idea. I know at that rate I couldn't maintain form as well, and I also didn't want to stop to readjust the strap.
Also I got those new straps I linked and I've decided they are shit. The cylinder shaped pad is soft as fuck, and it's basically like I've just got a regular old strap wrapped on my knee that doesn't put enough pressure on my tendon without cranking it down, and then it slips.
Benzer 05-11-2008, 11:06 AM Maybe you shouldn't be trying to run 7 minute miles.
gRraWr 05-11-2008, 02:09 PM there's always swimming, less damage on the joints
anomaly 05-11-2008, 03:00 PM i ran a timed mile for the first time ina bout 2 years today
5:24ish (had a watch =/ )
but yeah, watch out for your knees man, i took a year off marathon training and i hope its helped me, im trying to run the marine corps marathon on my 21st birthday in october (something different than everyone else :o )
Obskure 05-11-2008, 08:37 PM You gotta work your way up to those kinda speeds... your body is gonna scream and protest like crazy if you don't listen to it
Radon006 05-12-2008, 12:43 AM i ran a timed mile for the first time ina bout 2 years today

Damn, not bad.
I think a mile is the perfect length to test endurance, and mental toughness. I hope to be able to run a sub 5 minute mile someday.
My knee feels fine now after taking a few days off, but I think i'll wait until I can get a better patellar band to do anymore running.
I'm running every morning at 5:30.
AM? or 5min30sec mile?
Amazon Jim 05-17-2008, 09:59 PM AM? or 5min30sec mile?
Both!
Ok, I'm still not down to 5:30s on the miles.....I hate running that hard and have not done a 1 mile run for time in years. Maybe I will in a couple months and see where I'm at. I can run 6 minute miles at will for 6 miles no problem....anything more and I'm hurting. I generally just do 6:20s as I'm not totally focused all the time.
I get up, start out slow and loosen up, then run a med-pace, then cooldown. Few stretches (if any). :(
