Jay Turser jt-133. i wanted a semi-hollowbody for some time now, and i like how the gibson 335 looks. i got this off ebay for $250. i had never heard of the brand before, but two weeks ago i met this guy at a wake who has been playing for 30+ years and has over 15 guitars and he highly recommended them, so i gave it a shot. i just got it last night and haven't had much time to play it yet, but it's got a brighter sound than i expected. i don't know what gauge strings came on it but i'm getting a weird metallic sound when playing the bass ones. it came with d'addarios, which i normally use. tonight i'm gonna try lowering the action and really play around with it.

Looks nice! But $250?! What's the catch? Where are these guitars made?

american brand, chinese made.
when i was reading the reviews on harmony-central (it got great reviews overall), there were complaints of blemishes in the finish and some problems with the polish. mine has 1 blemish in the finish that's only noticeable if your nose is up against it. then there's a few blemishes in the binding of the f-holes, but that's it. they bug me b/c i'm a perfectionist, but honestly they're hardly noticeable.

by the way, is there an easy way to tell the string gauge? i have a feeling these are 10's or 11's.

Should be able to tell just by feel. 9's feel really "slinky" and light, 11's should be noticeably thicker feeling and have a heartier tone. They're probably 10's, but since it's a jazz guitar I dunno what the standard would be from the factory. Re-string it so you know :)

my next guitar is going to be a semihollow gretsch probably... they're just not that good for hard rock, i discovered. ;o

if i restring, and it is a different gauge, i've gotta adjust the truss rod, right? i never set up an electric before, but i watched as a tech did my strat when i fuxzored it up.

some of the gretsch semihollows are gorgeous. i wanted one but couldn't afford it.

Let us know how it is, I am getting pretty interested in semi hollows lately, can't decide if I want humbuckers or p90s though

please don't ruin your new guitar by messing with the truss rod, take it to a professional.

i found out it's got 10 gauges on. i'm gonna keep them on and try to get used to it, so i won't be screwin with the truss rod.

I'm lookin' at Sparrow Guitar Co. (http://www.sparrowguitars.com/), they're based here in Vancouver. My next axe will probably be from them.
