CNN was targeted Thursday by attempts to interrupt its news Web site, resulting in countermeasures that caused the service to be slow or unavailable to some users in limited areas of Asia.

The attempt came as tech-oriented Web sites in Asia were reporting calls from hacker groups in China for denial-of-service attacks to be launched against the CNN Web site on Saturday over the network's coverage of unrest in Tibet.

Angry Chinese bloggers have accused CNN and several other Western news organizations of being unfair in covering recent pro-independence protests in Tibet, which is controlled by China.

I don't get it. Why the hell do the Chinese want Tibet so bad. I can understand the government, but the people actually support it?

I should probably keep up on this.

I'm amazed that a site as large as cnn doesn't have counter measures already in place for such attacks. When an ip starts pounding a server its pretty easy to set up an auto temp banning system, so after so many concurrent requests per second the ip is either fed a blank html page or banned for a short time.

Its happened to my site on a several occasions. The first time it came extremely close to taking down the site and server, I ended up banning all of asia for a week, "which sucks considering I have some good friends from beijing"... Since then we wrote logging code into our web server software specifically for such attacks to disallow and log such things.
Its not bullet proof as nothing really is but it helps.

PC World - Business Center: Hackers Cancel Attack on CNN (http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/144850/hackers_cancel_attack_on_ cnn.html)

A planned cyberattack against CNN's Web site fizzled out Saturday as the group backing the event called it off.

"Our original plan for 19 April has been canceled because too many people are aware of it and the situation is chaotic," wrote a group called "Revenge of the Flame," according to a translation posted on the Dark Visitor Blog. "At an unspecified date in the near future, we will launch the attack."

Good find KnightMare...

Now the site is prepared for it. I doubt it will have much affect on service.
