sarbuze 04-17-2008, 10:27 AM Dear TW Web Designers/Programmers,
I am in need of some expert web design/programming and am willing to compensate the right person $1000 for their work.
Please only respond if you are serious and can provide:
Basic website layout (no flash, nothing intricate) simple friendly user nterface.
Some type of basic service that allows users to register, login and post images/videos (such as youtube).
An algorithm or other program to automatically upload users content into the system in a time-dependent manner (uploads go into a queue and are uploaded in the order in which they are approved).
A basic shopping cart feature that accepts paypal/credit card payment upon user submission of material.
This is unrelated to my food/wine website.
I look forward to serious inquiries.
liggyman 04-17-2008, 11:09 AM I would honestly recommend you try an open source solution. Dot Net Nuke, Joomla, or something similar.
Or budget someone $1000 to put together an Open Source solution for you.
$1000 for a custom project with what you are asking is low for an expert job, and if someone actually does do it at that price you may be wasting your money.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into to Joomla, I've heard a little about it. The main problem is I don't have much free time to develop the site and just want to get something basic up now. What do you think is a fair price for what I am asking for, by the way?
liggyman 04-17-2008, 06:35 PM I wouldn't have commented on the price if you said $2000 but I have talked to some peeps (which I also referred to this post). They even balked at $2000 saying that corners would have to be cut.
Just keep in mind, that making a site do things is relatively straight forward. But doing it properly, and keeping the code modular, clean, and documented takes a bit more time. On top of that you need to make sure that the site is secure from cross-site scripting, sql injections, session hijacking, etc.
Just think about the number of hours that would be spent on something like this, and multiply by a number between 80 - 140 and you will get a general idea of what would seem fair. ( 5days*8hours*100 = 4000 ) It seems high, but they are outside contractors and not employees which has it's own benefits.
I'm in the same boat as you though. I have a site half finished, but am finding it harder and harder to find time to finish it. Even when I think it's finished I'm going to need to hire a 3rd party to do a security audit on it to make sure I didn't miss anything. That in and of itself typically starts around 1000-2000$
sarbuze 04-18-2008, 10:34 AM Points taken. Perhaps I'll just have to come up with a few thousand more- I want to do the site and make sure it goes off without major problems, so it's worth the investment.
Thanks for the advice and best of luck on your project.
HaPpY 04-18-2008, 05:38 PM if you want the job done right, do it yourself.
just a hunch, is this a porn site?
Garion 04-18-2008, 07:30 PM Yeah there's a lot of ambiguity there too. When you say upload pictures/videos, is it going to be just a hosting site? Or is there going to be image (and video) manipulation, streaming playback, etc?
What about administration features? You're going to need a separate admin interface so you can approve, deny, and delete members, along with approve/deny/delete content. It's not a real easy thing to do.
Joomla/other open source CMS would probably be your best bet, but you still need someone to set it up and slap some half-decent design on it.
Dumpy Dooby 04-19-2008, 09:52 AM I would like to point out that when you say that you want a shopping cart as well, you should note that you will be incredibly limited if your goal is to sell a service as a product. I spent a lot of time, and I mean a lot, looking for an open source solution to selling a service as a product for my company's site. None of the major shopping cart scripts offer it besides OSCommerce, and even that one has its flaws. Drupal can handle it with a bit of tweaking, but Drupal in and of itself requires some dedicated learning.
Part of the reason I know PHP so well now is because I wound up just building that site myself.
sarbuze 04-20-2008, 09:40 PM Hey guys, thanks for feedback.
It's not a porn site. The "uploads" could include video, pics, text, etc...but all images are subject to approval and absolutely NO PORN!
Instead of a shopping cart, I think I may do a free version and a paid version (with a small monthly fee that has serious benefits).
If anyone reads this and is still interested, let me know!
