iNVAR 04-17-2008, 02:40 AM hrm, just saw this:
edit: also, even if I directly connect one of the 169 comps to my modem, it still doesn't get a new ip.but you just got a new ip, didn't you?
so which is it?
[MD5]Hash 04-17-2008, 02:43 AM Well, if you're switching comps/switches in and out of a router, I'm going to tell you right now that EVERYTHING needs to be restarted when you do this.
Your modem won't happily switch between comps if you're swapping stuff in and out of your modem, period. It'll recognize one device only, once it has that finger print you can't swap the device out without powering the modem off then back on to re-sync with your service provider.
So if all your doing is unplugging one comp from the modem then plugging it into the modem, no dice. Will not work, modem has to be powered off, then back on, then once the modem has re-established it's connection then you can swap out the comp.
icZer 04-17-2008, 03:19 AM Ok, well all comps are for sure working when directly connected to modem. Does require a restart of modem like you said. I guess I'll try resetting everything again and try with the switch.
icZer 04-17-2008, 06:03 AM so i'm currently messing around with only two of the comps. it seems that i can only have one connected at a time through my switch. turning the modem on and off sometimes switches which one works. both ip's are not the same.
icZer 04-17-2008, 08:01 AM Yeah, so when I turn both comps off and reset the modem, whichever one i turns on first works. Again, when I check their IPs while they're working, both are different. I tried manually entering the IP/DNS info on the one that isn't working, but that doesn't seem to work either - however it's possible I could be doing something wrong, but everything looks correct.
liggyman 04-17-2008, 08:45 AM Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
from your 'ipconfig /all' it is showing the cable as being disconnected. (no link light)
Is your switch wired as so:

iNVAR 04-17-2008, 09:17 AM Yeah, so when I turn both comps off and reset the modem, whichever one i turns on first works. Again, when I check their IPs while they're working, both are different. I tried manually entering the IP/DNS info on the one that isn't working, but that doesn't seem to work either - however it's possible I could be doing something wrong, but everything looks correct.then i'm wrong and it's not your switch. it's your modem, or more specifically, it's your ISP. for whatever reason, they've locked you to one IP address.
get a router (i would do this), or call them and pay for more IPs (i wouldn't do this)
[MD5]Hash 04-17-2008, 03:28 PM then i'm wrong and it's not your switch. it's your modem, or more specifically, it's your ISP. for whatever reason, they've locked you to one IP address.
That's kind of what I was thinking too, when he said one machine would work but not the other.
Get a router, stop overpaying your ISP for a number, I know each ISP is different, but they usually charge $5-$10 for a second IP address per month, for something you can freely get from a router which costs usually $30-$40, then you can stop paying the extra cash per month to your ISP.
