How do you prepare for a mix?
I'm using some ancient CDJs and a barebones mixer thats twice as old. I've got my setlist prepped and written in my little pocket notebook, along with BPMs and keys. I've got the tracks I want burnt on 3 CD-r's, I'm thinking about making doubles of them. Plenty of extra cables.
Any advice?

Real DJs use vinyl.

You suck at everything.

Edit: Most use laptops.

I've got a midi controller and a PC along with REAPER, Ableton Live, and FL Studio. But I just mix for fun.

Real DJs use vinyl.

Actually a lot of them are either moving to CDJs, a laptop/pc setup (as assfrags said), or timecoded vinyls/CDs (where they set up the tracks on the PC and mix on their tables or CDJs using MP3s).

Having a set tracklist is never good. Keep an idea of where you are going, but dont pigeonhole yourself - biggest asset is to read a crowd. Have an outline of what you want to do, but never have a set list to follow. Also remember to look 2/3 tracks ahead of where you are, allows for much better transitions between styles.

Vinyl is great, but these days you need to substitute it with other things. Computers have come a long way and allow you to do a lot of crazy shit. Even if you are still using vinyl for tracks, a computer set up on a send track can be used for effects and make sets way more interesting.

I'm joking, if you're good with a computer more power to you. I still really like the sound quality of vinyl though.
